You (the commentator) said: 'Even if all other's tenets are refuted, the meaning of the word 'self-nature related to...' must be explained.' Although this doubt-clearing is explained in the context of elaborating intention in Pramāṇavārttika (Commentary on Valid Cognition), it is very good to apply it in the context of elaborating intention in Pramāṇaviniścaya (Ascertainment of Valid Cognition), because it is the unique characteristic that distinguishes one's own tenet from others' tenets. As Pramāṇaviniścaya says: 'The word 'self' means that even if the treatise establishes many aspects for one subject (dharma-dharmin), one must only establish the self-nature accepted by one's own tenet, and even if the treatise has been promised, one cannot establish other views.' This shows that even if all other's tenets are refuted, the author says 'self' in his own commentary, which means making a commitment without relying on the treatise, which shows that the word 'self' is to dispel the place of doubt.' This has been clearly stated. So, the word 'self' is necessary to eliminate ambiguities different from the word 'intention', but how does the word 'intention' have more necessity than the word 'self'? In this regard, the word 'intention' also has the necessity to eliminate ambiguities of different categories. If it is not explicitly expressed in the limb of the argument at that time, the ambiguity that 'the proposition at that time is not a correct proposition' will arise; if the proposition at that time is a correct proposition, then it must be explicitly expressed in the limb of the argument at that time, because this is the unique boundary of the word 'intention'. In addition, there are different distinctions between the two, the word 'self' is used to eliminate the over-generalization of other aspects of meaning, and the word 'intention' is used to eliminate the situation of non-generalization. Just like what was said above, 'self-nature is the essence of words,' etc. Similarly, it is necessary to recognize that one's own tenet and others' tenets, as well as the word 'only', have both common necessities and unique necessities. If one cannot recognize this and explains and chooses this treatise, it will become a laughing stock for the wise. Why is that? In the argument at that time, the unestablished example that may become the proposition in the future, and the limitation of the correct proposition of other arguments at that time, are the common necessities of these three, because not only can the word 'only' eliminate, but one's own tenet and others' tenets can also eliminate. So, how do one's own tenet and others' tenets eliminate? To establish this, it is necessary to rely on reasoning and scripture, first to establish through scripture.

‘By expressing one's own intention, even if the determined meaning is understood.’ As stated in the Compendium, these two self-accepted intentions establish the meaning of uniqueness or certainty. Therefore, taking the proof at that time as the true thesis at that time, this shows. Then, is it considered unnecessary to separately state ‘uniqueness’? It is not unnecessary. Because in order to dispel the wrong conception of whether the unestablished examples that may become the thesis in the future are the true thesis, it is necessary. Regarding this, through ‘Because it is related to the edge of the action, it is declared to cut off other times,’ is shown. Second, it is established by reason that these two self-accepted intentions can cut off the unestablished examples that may become the thesis in the future, which is the true thesis for others at that time. Because these two self-accepted intentions can cut off what the pure opponents at that time do not consider to be the true thesis at that time, it is the true thesis at that time. The opponents at that time take the unestablished examples at that time as the proof at that time, but do not consider it to be the thesis at that time. Moreover, this reason is, ‘Even if all other tenets are refuted,’ is shown. Therefore, although the wise and intelligent are free from cowardice, occasionally there will be cases where a little bit of the light of wisdom is taken away. For example, in the Great Commentary of the Great Bodhisattva, the Great Commentary of Kunsang, and Khedrup Je's Commentary, when adding words at ‘By expressing one's own intention,’ etc., if the word of intention stated in the Compendium is not related to the object to be explained, even if the determined meaning is understood, it cannot cut off the unestablished examples that may become the thesis in the future as the true thesis due to the relationship. The word of intention of the reason is not related to the object to be explained, so it can be cut off. The phenomenon of saying this is not intelligent, because it does not understand the key to the reason of ‘Even if all other tenets are refuted,’ etc., and for these five parts, one has already explained separately that they are dissimilar and dispel wrong conceptions, and one has not remembered the contradiction with the promise. The wise Shakya Chokden, although he explained well the way to dispel dissimilarities through the word of intention of ‘By expressing one's own intention,’ the ‘self’ at that time is the characteristic of the intention, not the removal of the doubt of ‘self’ in the five parts.
