The so-called 'words of statement' or 'vows' are the former or inner limbs, and the 'reason' and 'example' that prove it are the latter limbs. These (words of statement, reason, and example) are used as components of the debate for the purpose of refutation, because the vow is the basis for establishing the argument. As Jñānaśrī said: 'The first limb is the vow, the second is the reason, and the third is the example.' Here, the three limbs are explained. If we consider it in terms of five limbs, the fourth limb is application, and the fifth is conclusion.' In the self-commentary of the *Pramāṇasūtra* (Treatise on Valid Cognition), it is also said: 'Among the limbs, the part that indicates what should be inferred, we do not consider it necessary to establish, because it causes doubt.' Therefore, explaining the words of statement as a limb also takes into account that it is the former limb. Someone might ask: 'If the reason is not established as a property of the subject, or the example does not follow similarity, this is also a fault of the subject, because it hinders the establishment of the subject. For example, when stating 'sound is the subject, it is impermanent, because it is an object of visual consciousness', the key point that sound is not an object of visual consciousness makes it impossible for that reason to prove that sound is impermanent.' Answer: Even if the key point that sound is not an object of visual consciousness hinders the reason from proving that sound is impermanent, the fact that sound is not established as an object of visual consciousness should not be regarded as a fault of the subject. Because if that were the case, all the faults of contradictory, uncertain, and unestablished reasons would become faults of the subject in that situation, because all of these would hinder the establishment of their respective subjects. If someone accepts this view, then when explaining the definition of the subject, it would also be necessary to explain how to eliminate the faults of the reason, but this is not necessary, because the hindrance will be explained below. As it is said: 'Faults of reason, etc., also become faults of the subject, because all harm the subject.' Therefore, the object of visual consciousness is a reason with the fault of being unestablished, which cannot prove that sound is impermanent. The fact that sound is not established as an object of visual consciousness, and the unestablished property of the subject related to it, must be regarded as the fault of the unestablished reason related to it. Although things with the fault of being unestablished do not necessarily need to exist, the fault of being unestablished must exist in things with the fault of being unestablished. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Therefore, signs that are uncertain and contradictory also apply to flaws. Second, discussing aspect flaws. Things, subject (Tibetan: ཆོས་ཅན, Sanskrit Devanagari: धर्मिन्, Sanskrit Romanization: dharmin, Chinese literal meaning: possessing dharma), such as examples and signs that have not been proven, etc., are not aspect flaws. Therefore, that reasoning is only related to the object to be proven. Flaws related to that are considered aspect flaws. Other than that, flaws in signs and examples related to that are not aspect flaws related to that. Because it is necessary to separately distinguish and state that the objects to be excluded from the definition of a correct sign are sign flaws, and the objects to be excluded from the definition of a correct aspect are aspect flaws. For example, contradicting direct perception, sound is not audible, the harm caused by direct perception to sound not being audible is like an aspect flaw in proving that sound is not audible. Contradicting inference, sound is permanent, the harm caused to the adherence to the commitment is like an aspect flaw in proving that sound is permanent. In the presence of an opponent who has ascertained that sound is impermanent through valid cognition, the fact that sound is impermanent has already been established, which is like establishing the already established aspect flaw of proving that sound is impermanent. Therefore, it is explained: 'Only related to that, it is considered an aspect flaw, not others, just like contradicting direct perception, etc.' Here, most commentators also explain: 'Just like contradicting direct perception, sound is not audible, contradicting inference, sound is permanent, etc.' This is also unreasonable because sound not being audible, sound being permanent, etc., are not aspect flaws because they are prevented by valid cognition. Therefore, when proving that sound is permanent, sound being permanent is a thing with an aspect flaw, and the fact that valid cognition excludes sound being permanent is an aspect flaw in proving that sound is permanent, because it must be admitted that it is necessary to distinguish between things with aspect flaws and the categories of aspect flaws. Third, discussing the objects to be excluded from the five aspects of complete exclusion. Only one completely exclusive aspect is shown, which eliminates the doubts of discerning scholars. First, discussing how to eliminate the objects to be excluded from the aspect definition. Starting from the above 'Are these not the flaws of those?' etc., the flaws of things, subject, signs, and examples are not aspect flaws because they do not depend on the way the objects to be excluded from the definitions of the cause of knowledge, signs, and examples, etc., are excluded. In order to avoid flaws that do not cover the correct aspect and flaws that excessively cover the reverse, therefore, the five aspects of the aspect definition are explained in the Compendium of Topics.
