Knowing (khyab ste): 'What is the reason for mentioning 'self' since the opponent engages in acceptance and rejection through treatises, in order to understand this?' The first answer to this question is: 'What does the acceptance and rejection of treatises mean?' Refuting it: It is the direct meaning and the implied meaning. Firstly: If one thinks that one cannot accept the later treatise by abandoning the former treatise, from where does this doubt arise: from an opponent who is sharp or dull? If it is said to be from a sharp opponent, then it is not so. Because if a sharp person is not prevented by the meaning of the scriptures and the valid means (of cognition) of the scriptures, then how can the scriptures he himself holds be overturned by his own words? It cannot be overturned. If it is prevented by the meaning of the scriptures and valid means (of cognition), then for what reason would one accept it from his words? It cannot be accepted. If it is said to be from a foolish opponent, then it is not so either. Because those foolish opponents, even before, hold to a tenet by their own volition. How could those foolish opponents not obtain holding other scriptures later? They can obtain it. Explaining as follows: Then from where does this doubt arise? 'If it is not prevented by valid means (of cognition), then what can overturn its holding? If it has been prevented by valid means (of cognition), then for what reason would one accept it from its words? Those people even before hold to a tenet by their own volition. Then what will they do later? How can they not obtain holding others (scriptures)?' Secondly, the implied meaning is: This characteristic of the logic of Master Dignāga (Slob-dpon Phyogs-glang) is that, previously, the opponent was merely satisfied with the word 'volition,' but the master (Dignāga) himself used the word 'self-volition.' This is a subject (chos can). You do this not for the sake of needing to satisfy the volition of others, but in order to eliminate the wrong notion that all the scriptural meanings of the author of the treatise are not necessarily the correct object to be proven at the moment. Eliminating such a wrong notion is also necessary, because this wrong notion is the basis of many other wrong notions. Because even if the scriptural meaning that the previous opponent does not wish to prove does not harm the thesis that he himself wishes to prove, it is still thought that it will harm that thesis, which is the basis of wrong notions. Even if all the scriptural meanings that the previous opponent does not wish to prove are not what is to be proven at the moment, it is still thought that they are, which is also the basis of wrong notions. Mentioning this can also eliminate this wrong notion, because if the scriptural meaning that is irrelevant to the thesis harms the thesis to be proven at the moment, then it would lead to endless inferences such as the thesis that sound is impermanent must also be harmed, etc. Therefore, the master (Dignāga) taught in this way.

'Bya min. Thug pa med par bstan pas na. Log par rtok pa sel ba'i phyir. 'Dir ni rang nyid sgra mdzad do zhes so. Snying gi thig ler sim par mdzod cig.' Because it has been shown that there are no obstacles, in order to eliminate wrong ideas, it is said here that oneself makes a sound. Please integrate it into the bindu of your heart! 'Chos kyi grags pa'i byin rlabs zhugs so.' The blessings of Chokyi Drakpa (chos kyi grags pa) have entered. The second view is: Some disciples of Dharmakīrti believe that the word 'self' is not always redundant and inapplicable, because the special points of debate arising from internal and external doctrines are completely abandoned. For a dharma that is well-known to both debaters, in order to grasp the main point of the debate, it is necessary to say the word 'self'. This is an elaboration of the previous view: 'The differences arising from doctrines, completely abandoned, are extremely well-known, the dharma is to grasp the main point, others speak their own voice.' Refuting this view: When both debaters are debating, in order to make the dharma of debate appear consistent on the surface, it is not necessary to mention the word 'self'. Because when both debaters analyze two different attributes on the same basis, they will know that the basis of reliance, which is well-known to both parties, has reached a consensus on the surface. Because there are no such debaters who, according to their own wishes, debate on special points of debate and different objects of attributes. The elaboration is as follows: 'The time of analysis is that, the extremely well-known basis will be established, because there is no debate on special objects analyzed according to one's own wishes.' The third view is that the word 'self' is mentioned in order to refute the established dharma from becoming the dharma to be established. If someone says that the word 'self' is not always redundant and inapplicable. Because the debater wants the other party to know that the dharma that has been established in the current debate is not the dharma that needs to be established at the moment, it is necessary to say the word 'self'. This is an elaboration of the previous view: 'If it is said that the established dharma is not the dharma to be established.' Refuting this view: For the dharma of knowable objects, in order to exclude the established dharma from becoming the real dharma to be established, it is not necessary to mention the word 'self'. Because when explaining the correct aspect of 'for the sake of others' in the Abhidharmakośa, the phrase 'showing one's own nature' itself can make people understand that the established dharma is not the dharma to be established. Because the debater may think that the nature that has been established at the moment, or although it has not been established, has been used as a means of argumentation, is the real dharma to be established at the moment. In order to eliminate this wrong idea. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
