Then, as for the self-awareness (rang rig) of manifest experience, it is not produced by its object of experience (myang bya), the co-emergent condition (bdag rkyen) of manifest appearance—the physical sense faculty (dbang po gzugs can pa), because that is not its co-emergent condition. However, the co-emergent condition of the object of experience, manifest appearance, is produced by the physical sense faculty. Because by the power of its producing the object of experience, the experiencer, self-awareness, is also produced. This is a celebration of the well-spoken. Second, from the perspective of the objective condition, the way of producing five stages is: since self-awareness has no objective condition, there is no analysis of stages. But sense consciousness and mental consciousness have objective conditions, so there is a way of producing five stages from the perspective of the objective condition. That is, in the continuum of one person, taking the second moment of form (gzugs), the second moment of sound (sgra), etc., as objective conditions, the first moment of form-perceiving mental consciousness (gzugs 'dzin yid mngon) and the second moment of form-perceiving sense consciousness (gzugs 'dzin dbang mngon), as well as the first moment of sound-perceiving mental consciousness and the second moment of sound-perceiving sense consciousness, etc., arise simultaneously. Therefore, this is called five stages from the perspective of the objective condition. The reason for naming it this way is that, taking the second moment of form, etc., as objective conditions, five manifest cognitions (mngon sum) grasping the five objects arise simultaneously. If distinguished by negation, it can also be called the stages of ten manifest cognitions grasping the five objects arising simultaneously, because taking the second moment of form as the objective condition, the second moment of sense consciousness and the first moment of form-perceiving mental consciousness, etc., arise simultaneously. Like this, if the stages of the object are analyzed, since self-awareness has no other object, it will become five stages. Third, the way of producing seven stages from the perspective of attention (yid byed) is: from the perspective of the immediately preceding condition (mtshungs pa de ma thag rkyen), there is a way of producing seven stages, that is, on top of the above five stages, separating and adding the experiential self-awareness of sense consciousness, thus seven arise simultaneously. The reason for calling this the seven stages of attention is that, for the five manifest cognitions grasping the five objects, just as there is an immediately preceding condition mental factor (sems byung) of attention, for the two experiencer self-awarenesses, there is also one of the five ever-present aggregates (kun 'gro lnga'i nang tshan) of the immediately preceding condition that belongs to attention. Like this, if the attention of the two, sense and mental consciousness, is added, it will become seven stages. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So! If the two mental activities of the sense faculties and mind are added to the former two, then the statement 'added' is incorrect. It should be stated that the mental activities of the sense faculties and mind, when added to the former two. Because here, through the immediately preceding condition of mental activity, the two results of fruit and self-awareness are added. Because the two self-awarenesses are not the former mental activity. 2-158 If there is wisdom, one should contemplate. Third, regarding the distinctions of objects. If it is said that the meaning of 'perception' is the object of the senses, mind, and consciousness, then it is pervasive of either external objects or consciousness. This is a general statement and does not apply to special cases. Therefore, it should be said that if it is the apprehended object of manifest objects, then it is pervasive of external objects. Fourth, regarding the manner of teaching in the scriptures. In the *Pramanavarttika* (量理宝藏论), it says: 'The mind also, with respect to objects and attachment, etc., is without conceptualization.' This directly indicates the object-cognizing mental perception and the self-cognizing mental perception. 'The mind also' indicates that not only are the sense perceptions non-conceptual perceptions, but some mental consciousnesses are also non-conceptual perceptions. So, how is this the case? 'Objects' indicates that object-cognizing mental consciousnesses are non-conceptual perceptions with respect to the five objects such as form. 'Attachment, etc.' indicates that self-cognizing mental consciousnesses of experiences such as desire, hatred, etc., and pleasure, pain, etc., are non-conceptual perceptions with respect to objects such as desire, hatred, etc., and pleasure, pain, etc. Therefore, in the *Pramanavarttika* (释量论), it says: 'Therefore, the consciousness of the senses,' etc. In the *Pramananiscaya* (定量论), it says: 'The sense consciousness is the immediately preceding condition,' etc. In the *Nyayabindu* (正理滴论), it says: 'The two, object and sense consciousness,' etc., these directly indicate only object-cognizing mental perception. 'Therefore, the consciousness of the senses, arising from the immediately preceding condition, the mind is the one that apprehends other objects.' The 'mind' in this phrase is the directly indicated perception. 'The sense consciousness is the immediately preceding condition of that object, the one that apprehends is also the mind.' The 'also the mind' in this phrase is the directly indicated perception. 'The two, object and sense consciousness, the mind born from the immediately preceding condition.' The 'born mind' in this phrase is the directly indicated perception. These and object-cognizing mental perception have the same meaning. 'Therefore, the consciousness of the senses' is the directly indicated consciousness of the senses, and 'the sense consciousness is the immediately preceding condition of that object' is the directly indicated sense consciousness. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
