Because that is the state of conditioned phenomena. As it is said: 'The direct perception of mind is not, like sense consciousness, self-awareness alone.' The second point is about the difference between substance and continuity. The first point is: the object-cognizing mental direct perception is valid cognition, because it is a cognition that does not newly deceive its own object of apprehension. As it is said: 'Because it apprehends its own characteristic, there is no error.' The second point is: the object-cognizing sense direct perception has continuity, because the previous sense direct perception acts as the immediately preceding cause, and the subsequent one is produced. The object-cognizing mental direct perception does not have continuity, because the previous object-cognizing mental direct perception does not act as the immediately preceding cause, and the subsequent one is not produced. The object-cognizing mental direct perception must arise from its own immediately preceding cause, the sense direct perception. As it is said: 'From the physical sense arises sense consciousness.' etc., and 'Mind consciousness is not mind consciousness from the mind sense.' Therefore, for a person who produces ten moments of the form-apprehending sense direct perception, and from the eleventh moment onwards does not produce it, the first moment of the form-apprehending sense direct perception in that continuum is a consciousness with continuity, because although it does not have the continuity of the similar previous one, it has the continuity of the subsequent one. If someone says: 'Then, that phenomenon, it is too much to say that your (form-apprehending sense direct perception's) subsequent moment is produced from your previous moment as the immediately preceding cause.' Because this is being too attached to the words, it is not pervasive. If someone says: 'Then, it is too much to say that the tenth moment is a consciousness with continuity, because it has the continuity of the similar previous one.' If we follow worldly conventions, this is not pervasive here. But in the view of those who understand reasoning, even if we answer in this way, I think it is in accordance with reality. Third, regarding the state of arising, refuting the views of other scholars, and explaining it in a way that is consistent with one's own system. The first point is: some followers of the Ornament Teacher think that first the first moment of the form-apprehending sense direct perception arises, then the first moment of the form-apprehending mental direct perception arises, and so on, alternating in this way. This is unreasonable, because it contradicts the words of previous scholars, who said: 'Sense direct perception is like a continuous river, mental direct perception is like the spray of a river.' That is, sense direct perception arises continuously like a river, while mental direct perception arises like water droplets splashing from the sense direct perception. Furthermore, the Indian Dharmottara and those who follow him, such as the Early Scholars and the Gelugpas, think that only one mental direct perception arises at the very end of the continuum of whatever sense direct perception. This is also unreasonable, because when ten moments of sense direct perception arise, each moment of sense direct perception should produce a mental direct perception. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is because the three conditions for the arising of mental manifestation are complete at the same time as the mother and so on. 2-154 Thus, also, 'The edge of intercourse and continuity,' and so on. // Second, regarding our own system, we will explain how the three stages of self-cause arise, how the five stages of objective cause arise, and how the seven stages of attention arise. First, when the ten manifestations of grasping form sense consciousness arise continuously in the continuum of one person, then the first moment of grasping form sense consciousness in that continuum arises as the unparalleled companion of grasping form mental consciousness, because at that time the self-cause for the arising of grasping form mental consciousness is not complete, since the arising of grasping form mental consciousness must rely on the self-cause sense consciousness, because there is no grasping form sense consciousness that has become the immediately preceding condition of the first moment of grasping form sense consciousness. Therefore, the second moment of grasping form sense consciousness at that time arises simultaneously with the first moment of grasping form mental consciousness, because the second moment of grasping form acts as the common objective condition of the second moment of grasping form sense consciousness and the first moment of grasping form mental consciousness, and one mental factor that has become the first moment of grasping form sense consciousness acts as the simultaneous condition of the first moment of grasping form mental consciousness and as the immediately preceding cause of the second moment of grasping form sense consciousness, so the two of them and the three self-awarenesses of the experience of the two of them arise simultaneously. 2-155 Therefore, the cause of sense and sense consciousness / is the condition of mind. / Since it is self-awareness, there is no other continuum. / Therefore, manifestation is the third stage. // There is a reason for calling this the three stages of self-cause, because the second moment of the eye sense of form makes a non-common self-cause, and the second moment of grasping form sense consciousness, and the non-common self-cause of the main mind that has become the first moment of grasping form sense consciousness, the first moment of grasping form mental consciousness arise simultaneously, and the self-awareness of the experience of the two of them must necessarily arise simultaneously with the two of them. // If one asks, then what is the self-cause of the self-awareness of the experience of the two of them? Then one must understand that this is the key to arising from other-cause, that is, the experiencing self-awareness arises from the other-cause of the self-cause of the experienced consciousness. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
