'It is encompassed by its own realm and ground. There are five realms, from what is abandoned by seeing suffering to what is abandoned by meditation. There are nine grounds: the desire realm, meditative absorption, and the eight formless realms.' and so on. Those previously born are the equipotential cause of those not yet born and those not born. 'Only the future is not an equipotential cause,' this is said from scripture. What is the equipotential cause? The previously arisen roots of virtue are the equipotential cause of the later arising roots of virtue in their own realm, and of the dharmas that correspond to them. Thus, the past are the cause of the past and the present. The past and present are said to be the cause of the future.' and so on. That is not so, the equipotential cause is the cause with a similar result, but that is not reasonable for the future, because there is no before or after. What has already arisen cannot be a similar cause of the future, like the past of the present. The result cannot precede the cause, so the equipotential cause of the future does not exist.' It is said. 'If the present can be the equipotential cause of the future, how can the present be the equipotential cause of the present?' Although it is not explicitly stated in the text, I think it can be obtained by reasoning. Therefore, the characteristic of the contaminated equipotential cause is: that which is of its own ground, of the same kind as any of the five types to be abandoned by its own realm, which is contaminated, past or present, that opens up the later one. This will be explained below. Second, explaining the uncontaminated equipotential cause. Continuing from 'its own realm and ground' above. If it is said, 'To be the equipotential cause of that dharma, is it necessary for that dharma to be the same as its own realm and ground?' It is so for contaminated dharmas, but not for uncontaminated dharmas. The path truths of the nine uncontaminated grounds are mutually equipotential causes. Because the uncontaminated paths are like sudden guests, they do not divide the desire of that ground into realms, nor do they grasp it as their own by view. If it is said, 'Do all nine uncontaminated grounds act as the equipotential cause of everything?' It is not so. Among the nine uncontaminated grounds, the equal act as the equipotential cause of the equal, and the inferior act as the equipotential cause of the superior, and the superior...

It is explained that 'because they are not the cause of producing results'. Regarding the paths of the nine grounds, there is a verse that says: 'The paths of the nine grounds are mutually, both the same and different.' The auto-commentary says: 'The truth of the path of unobstructedness, special concentration, the four concentrations, and the three formless realms are the cause of equal fortune to each other.' Why is that? Because these are not suddenly come to those grounds, nor are they possessed by the desires of those grounds.' So, how should one understand that the path truths of the nine grounds are both the same and different? I will explain this, and there are four aspects to this: establishing from the perspective of the path, establishing from the perspective of the faculties, establishing from the perspective of the cause, and dispelling doubts about it. First, the path truths of the nine grounds, from the perspective of the path, there is a way in which they are the cause of equal fortune to each other: The forbearance of the knowledge of phenomena related to suffering in the path of seeing is the cause of equal fortune between itself, the future forbearance of the knowledge of phenomena, and the arising of the knowledge of non-arising, which is more excellent than itself; because the knowledge of non-arising has nothing more excellent than itself, it is the cause of equal fortune to the future knowledge of non-arising, which is the same as itself. Likewise, all the paths of seeing are the cause of equal fortune to the future paths of seeing, and the three of the undefiled path of cultivation and the path of no more learning. Likewise, all the paths of cultivation are the cause of equal fortune to the future paths of cultivation, and the two of the path of no more learning; the path of no more learning is the cause of equal fortune to the future path of no more learning, which is one.' The auto-commentary says: 'For the forbearance of knowing phenomena related to suffering, it is both the cause of the future itself and the differentiated cause between the knowledge of non-arising. Because the knowledge of non-arising has no other differentiation, it is only the cause of the knowledge of non-arising. The paths of seeing, cultivation, and no more learning are the causes of three, two, and one respectively.' Second, establishing from the perspective of the faculties: The path truths, from the perspective of the faculties, there is a way in which they are the cause of equal fortune: The path truth of the follower of faith with dull faculties is the cause of equal fortune to the six of the path of the follower of faith, the path of the follower of dharma, the faith-liberated one who has attained seeing, the one liberated in time, and the one not liberated in time. Likewise, the path truth of the faith-liberated one is the cause of the four of the path of the faith-liberated one, etc.; the path truth of the one liberated in time is the cause of the two of the one liberated in time itself and the path truth of the one not liberated in time; the path truth of the one not liberated in time is only the cause of the future path truth of the one not liberated in time. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
