'The result of separation' refers to the Vipaka fruit, as 'the fruit of accordance with the cause' has already been mentioned elsewhere. 'The dominant fruit' is not mentioned because everything is common. If someone asks, 'Doesn't 'the same birth, abiding, and cessation' only explain belonging to the same time?' It is not entirely so. For the mind of the unborn Dharma, although the following minds belong to the same time, their birth, abiding, and cessation are not the same. Therefore, for the mental factors that arise as the retinue of the unindicated unborn Dharma mind, you can say, 'You and that mind have four identical causes: being simultaneous with you, having the same result, having the same result of accordance with the cause, and being merely unindicated.' For the mental factors that arise as the retinue of the unindicated born Dharma, you can say, 'You and that mind have seven identical causes: on top of the above four, adding the same birth, abiding, and cessation.' In the *Bodhicharyavatara*, it says, 'For the unindicated unborn Dharma mind, there are four identical aspects: belonging to the same time, result, accordance with the cause, and being unindicated. For the born Dharma, there are the same four aspects, plus the same birth, abiding, and cessation, totaling seven.' Similarly, for the uncontaminated unborn and born Dharmas, there are also four and seven causes. For the non-virtuous and virtuous contaminated unborn Dharmas, there are five and eight causes. As the *Bodhicharyavatara* says, 'It is the same for the uncontaminated, only removing the unindicated and adding the virtuous. For the non-virtuous and virtuous contaminated unborn Dharmas, as their basis, there are the non-virtuous, etc., and belonging to the same time, result, Vipaka, and accordance with the cause, totaling five. For the born Dharmas, there are the same five, plus the same birth, abiding, and cessation, totaling eight.' Then, for any given mind, is it possible to determine the number of its own Dharmas that act as the co-emergent cause, and the number of Dharmas that act as the co-emergent cause for that mind? Any mind, even the least, can act as the co-emergent cause for fifty-eight Dharmas. For example, the non-conceptualization included in the second Dhyana and above. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Those obscured, unelucidated minds, in order to make their own retinue of mental factors (psychological activities)—the ten grounds (ten kinds of psychological states), and the forty characteristics of these mental factors, their own four characteristics, and the four concordant characteristics—a total of fifty-eight, able to arise together; and, in order to make themselves arise together with fifty-four dharmas, except for their own concordant characteristics, all others can do it. That is to say, the four characteristics of consciousness can make consciousness arise together, because it is very close to consciousness, just like a king and his entourage. But the four concordant characteristics cannot do this, because it is distant from consciousness, just like the king's servants. As the self-commentary says, in consciousness, a small number of things are the cause of the fifty-eight arising together, namely the basis of the ten characteristics, as well as its own characteristics and the eight corresponding characteristics. The cause of arising together is fifty-four dharmas, namely all except the corresponding characteristics. Therefore, if a dharma arises together with another dharma, it does not necessarily mean that it is the cause of that dharma arising together. For example, the four corresponding characteristics of consciousness, although arising together with consciousness, are not the cause of consciousness arising together; moreover, the four corresponding characteristics also arise together with each other, but are not the cause of each other arising together. Similarly, the followers of consciousness arise together with the corresponding characteristics, and also arise together with each other within themselves, but they are not the cause of each other arising together. The eight obstructive substances composed of the four great elements, included in the desire realm, arise together, but they are not the cause of each other arising together. The unobstructed form included in the Pratimoksha vows, namely the four or seven non-manifest forms of abandonment, are also not the cause of each other arising together. All future forms arise together with the causal elements, but they are not the cause of each other arising together. The attainment of the dharma to be attained arises together with the co-emergent dharma. But it is not the cause of the dharma to be attained arising together, because attainment is like the bark of a tree, different from the dharma to be attained and the fruit. As the self-commentary says, there is co-emergence, but not the cause of the cause of co-emergence, namely the corresponding characteristics of the dharma. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
