It is the cause of the co-arising of things with characteristics, because they are not that thing, so they need to be supplemented. As it is said in the *Bodhicharyavatara*: 'Supplementation is also to fully show that it is itself a great treatise.' Therefore, great treatises such as grammar seem to be accompanied by supplementation. Therefore, this treatise believes that all dharmas that arise together with that dharma are not the cause of the co-arising of that dharma; and which dharma arises together with that dharma, if they are the fruit of each other, that is the characteristic of the cause of the co-arising of that dharma. Generally speaking, the special case is not its characteristic, because it has the defect of not being able to cover the object it refers to.' As it is said in the *Bodhicharyavatara*: 'The cause of co-arising is not the things that co-arise.' Why? Because there is a dharma that co-arises, but is not the cause of co-arising. For example, the form aggregates produced by blue and so on as causes, although they co-arise, are not the causes of each other's co-arising. Therefore, the meaning of 'each other's fruit' is mentioned. This characteristic is also incomplete, therefore, it will be explained below: 'Even without each other's fruit, there is no supplementation.' Therefore, in the *Abhidharmakosha*, if you mistakenly think that the four, such as birth, are the names that indicate characteristics, do not talk nonsense, saying that characteristics do not need to avoid the four faults of pervasion. Second, the base: Then, what is the base of 'co-arising, being each other's fruit'? There is a way to establish it, just as the four great elements are the causes of each other's co-arising, and the mind and mental factors are the causes of each other's co-arising. Therefore, it must be understood that the characteristic, which is the four such as birth that are the characteristics of conditioned phenomena, is the base of the conditioned phenomena being the causes of each other's co-arising.' As it is said: 'Like the elements and the mind's attendants, the mind and its nature are also like that.' Then, what are the mind's attendants? There is a way to identify the mind's attendants, that is, the mental factors that arise in the mind, and the two kinds of vows of individual liberation that follow the mind, and the nature of the mind, such as the four of birth, and the nature of the mind's attendants, such as the four of birth, are all the mind's attendants. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Therefore, it is explained as 'because'. Mental events arising from the mind and the two vows, the mind and their characteristics, the followers of the mind, etc. Then, what is the reason for calling these the followers of the mind? Those mental events that arise as the retinue of the mind, possess the nature of phenomena. You have a reason to be called the follower of the mind, because you and the mind both, arising, ceasing, abiding, and time are the same, the result is the same, and the 'etc.' includes the maturation result being the same, and the outflow result being the same, you and the mind both, if good, are good together, if non-virtuous, are non-virtuous together, if neutral, are neutral together, that is, the same in any of the ten causes, therefore it is explained as 'because'. Time and results, etc., are indicated by good, etc. Here it is impossible for all ten causes to be the same, because it is impossible for the three, virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral, to be completely the same. If explained more clearly, the mental event—feeling—that arises as the retinue of a mind that does not arise as virtuous, possesses the nature of phenomena. You are such a follower of the mind, because you and it both, if arising, arise together, if ceasing, cease together, if abiding, abide together, and the time of you and it is also the same. The result of you and it, that is, the separation result and the agent result are also the same, the maturation result is also the same, the outflow result is also the same, and the virtue of you and it is also the same, that is, the same in terms of eight causes. Then, what is the necessity of mentioning the same time other than the three, arising, ceasing, and abiding? That is necessary, because the phenomena that do not arise in the future do not have the three, arising, ceasing, and abiding, so it is to indicate only that the future time is the same. Then, what is the necessity of showing that the outflow result and the maturation result are the same in 'etc.' other than the same result? That is necessary, because the separation result and the agent result establish the key point of distinguishing the specific from the general name 'result', so the two, the outflow result and the maturation result, are separated. Then, what is the reason for explaining 'the result of the owner is the same'? That has a reason, because the result of the owner is common to all, therefore it is explained. As it says in the *Ratnagotravibhāga* (Treatise on the Buddha-nature): 'Here the result is the agent result and...' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
