To the holder of the victorious teachings—the gentle protector—I recall your kindness and once again offer my salutations. The second teacher of the holy land—the friend of wealth—his son, the wise and eloquent prince, the satisfying and gentle master of Śrāvastī, and others—the masters of the manifest teachings—we have deep faith in them. Here, we investigate the scriptures of manifest teachings, clarifying cause, effect, and condition, to inspire the joy of the wise and offer a brief explanation to spark interest. Thus it is said: "Cause and co-arising condition..." At the appropriate time, to facilitate understanding, the meaning of the scripture’s words is explained; to imprint it on the mind, classifications are expounded in order; to delight the discerning, difficult points are analyzed. First, in the second section—explaining the “Treasury of Faculties”—it includes: Explanation of the classification of faculties with objects Explanation of the arising of conditioned phenomena Explanation of the classification of cause, effect, and condition, totaling three parts. This is the third part, divided into four: Explanation of cause Explanation of effect Explanation of condition Specific explanation of the immediately corresponding condition The first part (explanation of cause) is further divided into three: Brief presentation of distinctions Detailed explanation of each classification 1-823 Summarizing the meaning from the perspective of time The first is: "Without cause and condition, there is no arising; neither the arisen nor the producer exists." From this arises the question: Then, what are the causes? The knower of phenomena states that causes include: Producing cause Co-arising cause Homologous cause Corresponding cause Pervasive cause Maturation cause —six in total. This is what the commentators assert, as the Blessed One explained in the scriptures. So, how is it explained in the scriptures? Although in the past there were sutras that fully demonstrated the six causes, descending like rain, they have now been lost and no longer exist. From the citations derived from a single text, though there were once a hundred scriptures, now not even ten derived citations remain—only a fraction persists. However, in meaning, there are still sutras that fully demonstrate the six causes. For example, the sutra states: “Based on the eye and form, eye-consciousness arises. These three branches follow true view.” Co-arising...

feeling, perception, and mind. If from this root of virtue another root of virtue arises, and is united with a small thing, this person will later become one who possesses the Dharma of complete purity. Understanding combined with knowledge, this is faith with a basis of seeing. The actions of body, speech, and mind of a person with wrong views, will become unpleasant and unlovely, and so on. Because it is said, 'Intentionally done and accumulated actions will ripen,' and so on. Regarding the explanation that: 'Factors that arise together, factors that have equal share, factors that are universally present, factors that ripen, and cause, are considered to be six types.' Second, explaining the classifications separately. Among the six causes, the first is: If someone asks, what is the nature of the acting cause among the six causes? All conditioned phenomena are acting causes. All phenomena that are different from one's own essence are the acting cause of oneself, because all of them are other phenomena that do not hinder one's own arising. Regarding the explanation that: 'Different from oneself is the acting cause.' and 'All phenomena except one's own essence are the acting cause of conditioned phenomena, because they exist in a state that does not hinder arising.' and 'The king's son, different from oneself, is the acting cause.' The meaning is that different from oneself is a synonym for being opposed to oneself, because it contradicts one's own intention, so one's own essence is not the cause.' So, what is meant here by 'different from one's own essence'? Does it mean everything that is not oneself? Or does it mean something different from oneself and what arises together with oneself? Or does it mean a substance different from oneself? Or does it mean something different from one's own self-opposite? If it is the first case, then the conditioned phenomenon that is the acting cause of the conditioned phenomenon will not exist, because there is no unconditioned phenomenon of the conditioned phenomenon. If it is the second case, then the mind and the mental events that arise together with it, and their characteristics—the four characteristics of arising, etc.—will not be the acting cause of the mind, because they arise together with the mind and are not different. This cannot be accepted, because in the self-commentary it says: 'Phenomena that arise together are never the object, the main cause is this.' If it is the third case, then something like a golden vase will be a different substance from the vase, because it is the acting cause of the conditioned phenomenon. If it is the fourth case, then the appearance of a swollen belly, which we logicians use as a metaphor, -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ་བུ་དེ། 1-826
