It is called the 'dominant condition'. If one thinks that all dharmas are both objective conditions and dominant conditions, then there is a lack of additional meaning. Generally, these two are universally the same. However, if one distinguishes them on a single basis, there will be an excess of error, because the dharmas that arise simultaneously with the six consciousnesses are not its objective conditions, but its dominant conditions. As explained in the auto-commentary: 'This condition is additional, so it is the dominant condition. If the objective condition is also all dharmas, and the dominant condition is also all dharmas, then what is additional here? Dharmas that arise simultaneously are never objective, but are dominant conditions, so there is indeed something additional here.' Third, the definition: Subject, knowable, there is a way of establishing the dominant condition among the four conditions, because among the six causes, what is called the 'causal condition' is explained as the dominant condition. As the text says: 'The causal condition is called the dominant condition.' Fourth, the debate: As mentioned above. It is also necessary to distinguish the difference between merely the dominant condition and the dependent dominant condition. The dependent dominant condition is established from the aspect of performing the action of generating its own result, while merely the dominant condition is established from the aspect of not obstructing the arising of the result. Second, explaining how the four conditions function, divided into two parts: explaining the way the co-existent cause functions, and explaining the way the immediately preceding condition and the objective condition function. First, the two of the co-existent causes, namely the corresponding cause and the co-existent cause, act on the present result that is ceasing, because these two causes only produce the present result that is simultaneous with themselves. The other three of the five co-existent causes, namely the similar cause, the pervasive cause, and the ripening cause, act on the future result that is tending to arise, because they cause the result to arise outside of themselves. As the text says: 'The two causes act on ceasing, while the third cause acts on arising.' Second, the way the immediately preceding condition and the objective condition, other than the co-existent cause, function is the opposite of the former. The immediately preceding condition acts on the future that is about to arise by distinguishing the subsequent result. The objective condition, namely all conditioned phenomena, is only apprehended by the present consciousness and mental factors, so it acts on the present that is ceasing.' As the text says: 'The other conditions' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Therefore, the minds and mental factors that are the object-possessors, the present ones, perform the function of grasping objects. But the past has already been grasped, and the future will be grasped, so they do not function in the present. 1-926 Gyalsé (Bodhisattva) said: 'The objective condition is established for the grasping of present minds and mental factors, and it functions on what has ceased.' If the objective condition is established as the meaning of grasping, then past and future minds and mental factors are not those that grasp the object to be grasped, because it has been said so. Then, doesn't the past eye consciousness with dependence grasp objects? There is no fault, because the past and future consciousnesses with dependence have already performed the function of grasping their own objects, and the future ones will perform the function, so it is said to be 'with dependence,' but it does not grasp objects in the present, because it has no object. For consciousnesses that are of the nature of non-arising, not only do they not have objects in the present, but they have not existed in the past, nor will they exist in the future, so it is said that they are the same, because mind is of the nature of non-arising, and only it is the same as this. For those whose minds are blinded by the eye of discrimination to the clear meaning of the scriptures, this is not their field of activity. Then, what is the reason that the causal condition's way of functioning is not shown here? 1-927 There is a reason for that, because most of the dominant conditions are included in the latter three conditions, and those that are not included only perform the function of not obstructing the production of the result, so it is easy to understand. The self-commentary says: 'The dominant condition is that which exists in all circumstances as the nature of non-obstruction.' Third, analyzing which result arises from which condition. What arises from the four conditions are minds and mental factors, because it is possible for all four conditions to be complete in them. That is, minds and mental factors each have all five causal conditions as appropriate. Arising from a defiled or undefiled consciousness of the same class or not, it possesses the cause of equal class; for afflicted consciousnesses, it possesses the pervasive cause; all consciousnesses possess the concomitant cause; any mind and mental factor that is concomitant with oneself, and one's own four characteristics of arising, etc., are the cause of arising together with oneself, so it also possesses the cause of arising together; consciousnesses born of maturation possess the cause of maturation. Furthermore, minds and mental factors... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
