The objects of these five (five senses) are determined separately for what is born (སྐྱེ་མཆེད་, āyatana), substance (རྫས་, dravya), and moment (སྐད་གཅིག་, kṣaṇa). For example, if something is the objective condition of eye consciousness, then it must be the sense-sphere of form, because the born is determined. If yellow is considered the objective condition of eye consciousness, then it must be yellow. Moreover, if it is the objective condition of the first moment, then it must be the first moment, because the substance and moment are determined. As explained in the 'Self-Commentary' (རང་འགྲེལ་): 'The certainty of mind and mental factors regarding what is born, substance, and moment, is just how they are determined as objects. Then, are they also determined by the certainty of the support?' The answer is: 'Indeed. What is born is simultaneous with the support, and what is unborn and what has passed are not related to the support.' This means that just as the respective objective conditions of eye consciousness, etc., are determined, the co-emergent condition of the support is also determined as the respective sense-sphere. For example, if it is the co-emergent condition of eye consciousness, then it must be the eye faculty. Moreover, present eye consciousness is simultaneous with the present support, the eye faculty, while past and future eye consciousness are not simultaneous with the co-emergent condition, the eye faculty. These six are not the same as mind, because it is said that the co-emergent condition of the present six consciousnesses is not simultaneous with itself. Then, if something is the sense-sphere of form, must it be the object of eye consciousness? If something is the sense-sphere of form, it is not necessarily the object of eye consciousness, but it must be the objective condition of eye consciousness, because it exists within the category of objective conditions. As the 'Self-Commentary' says: 'If a certain dharma is the object of a certain dharma, even if that dharma is not perceived, it always has the nature of an object, because it is such. For example, wood, etc., although not burned, is called fuel because it has the nature of burning.' Then, if something is a dharma, it is not necessarily the object of the six consciousnesses, but is it acceptable to say that it must be the objective condition of the six consciousnesses? This is not the case, because the six consciousnesses and their aggregates are not their own objective conditions, as will be explained later. Therefore, the object or graspable object of eye consciousness must be simultaneous with it, that is, present, because past things have already been grasped, and future things are merely about to be grasped. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ah! May the lotus of the wise Vasubandhu open! For this subtle and pure principle, I cherish only you! Fourth, regarding the fourfold distinction: Regarding the objective condition (ālambana-pratyaya) of eye consciousness and its co-emergent cause (sahabhū-hetu), there are three possibilities: its objective condition is the present form-object (rūpa-āyatana), which is its objective condition; the case of not being a co-emergent cause; sound-object (śabda-āyatana) etc., which is the case of being neither; the case of being both does not exist, because if it is its objective condition, it must not be its co-emergent cause, because if it is so, it must not be any of the five causes that arise simultaneously with it. Regarding its objective condition and its immediately preceding condition (samanantara-pratyaya), there are also three possibilities; regarding its objective condition and its dominant condition (adhipati-pratyaya), there are also three possibilities; but there cannot be a fourfold distinction for these two, because the case of being both its objective condition and its immediately preceding condition does not exist, and the case of its objective condition being, and its dominant condition not being, also does not exist. Sixth, regarding the objective condition of mind consciousness (mano-vijñāna) and its co-emergent cause, there are four possibilities: the three unconditioned phenomena (asaṃskṛta-dharma) are its objective condition, and the case of not being a co-emergent cause; the mental factors (caitta) that are associated with it are its co-emergent cause, and the case of not being its objective condition; its homogenous cause (sabhāga-hetu) is the case of being both; the six consciousnesses (referring to mind consciousness itself) are the case of being neither, because the six consciousnesses are not the case of being both itself. Regarding the objective condition of mind consciousness and its immediately preceding condition, there are only three possibilities, its immediately preceding condition is, and the case of not being its objective condition does not exist, because the latter pervades the former. Regarding the objective condition of mind consciousness and its dominant condition, there are also only three possibilities, its objective condition is, and the case of not being its dominant condition does not exist, because the latter pervades the former. Its dominant condition is, and the case of not being its objective condition does exist, because the mental factors that are associated with it are its dominant condition, but not its objective condition, because consciousness does not cognize itself and the phenomena that are simultaneous with itself. Fourth, regarding the definition, meaning, example, and fourfold distinction of the dominant condition: A phenomenon that does not obstruct the arising of another phenomenon, from this perspective, can serve as the condition of that phenomenon, this phenomenon, you are the definition of the dominant condition of that phenomenon, because you are its basis of establishment. Second, regarding the meaning of the word: because it is a superior condition, it is 'dominant'. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
