Because the first moment of mindless absorption (Tibetan: སྙོམས་འཇུག, Snyoms 'jug) is interrupted, it is not an immediately preceding mind (Tibetan: དེ་མ་ཐག་པ་ཅན།, de ma thag pa can). Those absorptions are immediately preceding similarities of mind, because there is no other similar consciousness intervening between the two. The four characteristics of arising, etc., of the first moment of mindless absorption are immediately preceding minds, which is the second case of not being an immediately preceding similarity of mind. Because the external object of the mind of absorption arises immediately, and it is not produced from the immediately preceding cause of the similarity of mind, it cannot be an immediately preceding similarity of mind. Similarly, the arising, etc., of the second moment of mind is also the second case. Thus, it is an immediately preceding mind, because the external object of the first moment of mind arises immediately. It is not an immediately preceding similarity of mind, because it does not have an immediately preceding cause of similarity. Like the first moment of mindless absorption, it is the third case, thus, it is an immediately preceding mind, because the external object of the mind of absorption arises immediately to it. It is an immediately preceding similarity of mind, because although it is not consciousness, its own similarity arises from an immediately preceding cause. It will be explained in 'the three enter into the two'. Moreover, the second, third, etc., moments of mind that arise continuously in the mind stream are also the third case. The four characteristics of arising, etc., from the second moment onwards of mindless absorption, and the four characteristics of arising, etc., of the mind arising from cessation, are the fourth case of being neither. Because it is interrupted by the first moment, etc., of mindless absorption, it is neither an immediately preceding mind, nor is it an immediately preceding similarity of mind because its similarity does not have an immediately preceding cause, it will be explained. In the Auto-commentary, it says: 'Are those phenomena that are immediately preceding similarities of mind also immediately preceding minds?' There are four cases: the first case is the mind arising from mindless absorption, and the second moment of absorption, etc. The second case is the first moment of absorption, and the arising, etc., of the state with mind. The third case is the first moment of absorption, and the state with mind. The fourth case is the second moment of absorption. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

etc., and the arising of thoughts, etc. In relation to that, it is further explained as follows: In general, the similarity of any consciousness, as an immediate cause and dominant condition, does not go beyond three possibilities: If the similarity of that consciousness is an immediate cause, then it must be a dominant condition. However, for the supporting dominant condition of the five sense consciousnesses, and its similarity as an immediate cause, there are four possibilities: The second moment of the eye faculty is the supporting dominant condition of the second moment of eye consciousness, and its similarity is an immediate cause. When the second moment of eye consciousness arises, the mental factors that are similar to and concomitant with the immediately past first moment of eye consciousness, their similarity is an immediate cause, but not a dominant condition. At that time, the immediately past first moment of eye consciousness is both. And the objective conditions, such as form, etc., are neither. In the first place, the text says: 'The last five supports, they also arise together.' In the self-commentary, it says: 'Whatever is the object of support for eye consciousness, is it also the object of its similarity, the immediate cause?' Answer: There are four possibilities: The first is the eye faculty. The second is the immediately past mind arising from the Dharma realm. The third is the immediately past mind. The fourth is all phenomena other than what has been said.' However, for the supporting dominant condition of the sixth consciousness, and its similarity as an immediate cause, there are three possibilities: The immediately past mental factors whose similarity to the sixth consciousness is an immediate cause, their similarity is an immediate cause. The immediately past sixth consciousness whose similarity to the sixth consciousness is an immediate cause, is both. Form, etc., are not both. There is no possibility that it is the supporting dominant condition, but its similarity is not an immediate cause, because if it is its supporting dominant condition, then its similarity must be an immediate cause. The self-commentary says: 'Consciousness is connected to the previous moment. Pausing slightly, whatever is the object of support is also the similarity, also the object of the immediate cause. There is also something that is the similarity, the object of the immediate cause, but not the object of support, namely the immediately past mental factors arising from the Dharma realm.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
