This is to understand that, and to understand that among mind and mental factors, the arising of mind and mental factors, i.e., the past and present are the same, is the immediately preceding condition, but future mind and mental factors are not so. And, even if mind and mental factors are past and present, for the consciousness in the continuum of an Arhat who has attained nirvana without remainder, they are not the immediately preceding condition. This is to understand that, The necessity of the first aspect is: Form is not the immediately preceding condition, because the immediately preceding condition requires the cause and effect to be the same, but form is mixed. For example, after the form of the desire realm, the form of meditation can arise, and after that, the form of the uncontaminated can arise, etc. If someone thinks like this, then mind and mental factors should also be mixed, because after a virtuous mind, an afflicted mind arises, etc. To this, the self-system does not generally agree. Some Indian masters of Abhidharma believe that when an afflicted mind arises after a virtuous mind, the past of the afflicted mind is its immediately preceding condition, not the virtuous mind. For example, the mind entering cessation is its immediately preceding condition. However, the self-commentary does not say so. Therefore, the self-system believes that the immediately preceding condition does not require the cause and effect to be the same in terms of virtue and non-virtue, etc. The key is that the virtuous mind at this time can be recognized as the immediately preceding condition of the afflicted mind, etc., and it is necessary to grasp the key points. The key to the second aspect is that the future is not the immediately preceding condition, because the immediately preceding condition needs to produce its own subsequent result, but the future has no order of precedence. If someone says that then the Buddhas should not predict what will happen in the future, because there is no order of occurrence. To this, there are many answers, but because a definite answer has not been found, it is best to remain neutral. Therefore, if it is the future, it will not produce its own result, which is universal. The present dharma cannot be the immediately preceding condition of the present dharma, as it says in the *King of Concentration Sutra*: 'Therefore, the present dharma is not considered the immediately preceding condition of the present dharma, because there is no precedence.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is said because of the absence [of something]. From the point of the third aspect, the final consciousness of an Arhat (dgra bcom, Sanskrit: arhat, meaning: worthy of offerings) is not an immediately preceding condition, because it does not connect its own result, the subsequent wisdom. Third, the explanation of the term: both 'condition' and 'conditioned' are similar in terms of mental activity, and because there is no interruption by other cognitions of the same type, it causes immediate arising, hence it is a condition. As stated in the auto-commentary: 'This condition is both similar and immediately preceding, therefore it is an immediately preceding condition,' and so forth. Therefore, for an immediately preceding condition, both cause and effect are similar in terms of cognition, and the exterior of that condition does not necessarily have to be immediately preceding, because there exists an immediately preceding condition in the two mindless absorptions (snyoms 'jug, Sanskrit: samāpatti, meaning: attainment), and in cessation, there is a long duration between the mind of entering absorption and the mind of arising from it. Furthermore, it is not necessary for wholesome and unwholesome states to have a similar immediately preceding condition, because there are instances where mental factors (sems byung, Sanskrit: caitta, meaning: mental concomitants) of the mind act as an immediately preceding condition for the mind, and an unwholesome mind can act as an immediately preceding condition for a wholesome mind. If the last unwholesome mind (in the present) of a trainee whose continuum is certain not to manifest unwholesome minds anymore is not an immediately preceding condition, it contradicts the assertion that the final consciousness of an Arhat, which is not a mind or mental factor, and the past and present minds are pervaded by an immediately preceding condition. If that is the case, then there would be the fault of having an unwholesome mind caused by an immediately preceding condition. Therefore, an unwholesome mind can act as an immediately preceding condition for a wholesome mind, and vice versa. Fourth, the explanation of the four possibilities: there are four possibilities for having an immediately preceding mind and having a mind. The mind arising from a mindless absorption is one that has an immediately preceding mind but does not have a mind immediately following it, because it is one that is caused by the immediately preceding condition of the mind just before entering the mindless absorption, and because there is a long duration between the two, it is not one that arises immediately externally from the mind. The second moment of a mindless absorption is also the first possibility, because it arises from the immediately preceding condition of the mind just before entering that absorption, and there is no mind between the two. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
