At the time of connection (pratisaṃdhi), the nine roots of virtue (kuśalamūla) and the attainment of virtue, whether past, future, etc., are all connected together. As stated in the 'Karma Treatise': 'Cutting off the root with the view of non-existence, in the sequence of all, among humans, giving birth to a male or female cuts it off, connection is doubt with view.' Therefore, regarding the holding and giving of the co-emergent result (sabhāga-phala) of non-virtue, there are also four possibilities: For a person who is about to abandon the nine afflictions of the desire realm (kāmadhātu-nava-kleśa), the present attainment of non-virtue in their continuum is held but not given. For the attainment of non-virtue that has just declined from detachment from desire (vītarāga), the past one is given but not held. The other two situations are implied by these. Regarding the holding and giving of the co-emergent result of obscured and unspecified (kliṣṭāvyākṛta), there are also four possibilities: For a person who is about to attain Arhatship, the present attainment of obscured and unspecified in their continuum is held but not given. For a person who has just declined from Arhatship, the past attainment of that is given but not held, and so on. Regarding the holding and giving of the co-emergent result of unobscured and unspecified (akliṣṭāvyākṛta), there are three possibilities: For an Arhat who is about to pass into nirupadhiśeṣa-nirvāṇa, the last aggregate in their continuum is held but not given. The 'is' and 'is not' situations are easy to understand. There is no situation where the co-emergent result of unobscured and unspecified is given but not held, because there is no rising from nirupadhiśeṣa-nirvāṇa. Furthermore, based on the object (sālambana) and the basis (āśraya), regarding the holding and giving of virtuous mind (kuśala-citta) and the co-emergent result of virtuous mind, there are four possibilities: When a non-virtuous mind (akuśala-citta) or an unspecified mind (avyākṛta-citta) arises after a virtuous mind, it is the first possibility. When it is the opposite, it is the second possibility. When a virtuous mind arises after a virtuous mind, it is two possibilities. When a non-virtuous mind arises after a non-virtuous mind, there is no holding or giving of virtuous mind. The same can be inferred for non-virtuous mind, etc. This is not my own fabrication, because it has been clarified in the 'Self-Commentary'. That is, the last virtuous mind that is about to give rise to a non-virtuous mind, the present one, holds the co-emergent result of virtue, because that virtuous mind is present and is the virtuous seed of its own result. It does not give the co-emergent result of virtue, because that non-virtuous mind is its immediate condition (samanantara-pratyaya). Fourth, explaining what result arises from what cause. The dharmas of the result (phala-dharma)... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Question: From what do these six causes arise? Answer: Generally, if we summarize the phenomena of the resulting effect, they can be categorized into four types: afflicted (nyon mongs can), ripening-born (nam smin skyes), the first moment of the unpolluted (zag med skad cig dang po), and the remaining phenomena (lhag ma'i chos). Question: Then, what are the remaining phenomena? Answer: There is a way to establish the remaining phenomena: all the unspecified phenomena other than the ripening-born, and all the virtuous phenomena other than the first moment of the unpolluted. Having understood this, afflicted consciousness, ripening-born consciousness, consciousness that has become the remainder, and the noble one, that is, consciousness that has become the first moment of the unpolluted, all have a way of arising from the six causes: In order, afflicted consciousness arises from the remaining five causes except for the ripening cause; ripening-born consciousness arises from the remaining five causes except for the all-pervasive cause; consciousness that has become the remainder arises from the remaining four causes except for the ripening cause and the all-pervasive cause; the first moment of the unpolluted consciousness arises from the remaining three causes except for the ripening cause, the all-pervasive cause, and the similar cause. Therefore, it is explained: 'Afflicted and ripening-born, the remainder and the first noble one, ripening and all-pervasive, except for the similar, arise from the remainder.' If these are established in order for young students, then, afflicted consciousness does not arise from its own ripening cause, because it is not a ripening result. It arises from the remaining five causes, because it has each of the factors such as the acting cause, and because it has arisen. Ripening-born consciousness does not arise from its own all-pervasive cause, because it is not afflicted. It arises from the remaining five causes, because it has arisen, and because it possesses all five factors such as its acting cause. The remainder, that is, the unspecified consciousness that is not ripening-born, and the virtuous consciousness that is not the first moment of the unpolluted, do not arise from their own ripening cause and all-pervasive cause, because they are respectively not ripening results and not afflicted. They arise from the remaining four causes, because they have arisen, and because they possess their acting cause, similar cause, corresponding cause, and co-emergent cause. The first moment of the unpolluted is not its own ripening-born. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
