If asked, 'Is the cause also?' There are four possibilities: The first is: 'Causes with equal consequences are not universally present.' The second is: 'Causes that are universally present in other categories.' The third is: 'Causes that are universally present in the same category.' The fourth is: 'Those that do not belong to the above cases.' Therefore, for the corresponding result and the agent result of that Dharma, there are also four possibilities: The three moments of virtue (referring to the second and third moments of virtuous thought) are the corresponding result of the first moment of virtue, but not its agent result. Cessation through analysis (referring to contaminated cessation) is the agent result of the immediate path (referring to uncontaminated immediate path), but not its corresponding result. Furthermore, results that arise simultaneously are the agent result of the cause that arises simultaneously, but not its corresponding result. The second moment of virtue, etc., is both for the first moment of virtue (referring to both corresponding result and agent result). Non-selective cessation, etc., is neither. The third is the result of separation, which is the exhaustion of wisdom. The cessation obtained by the power of the immediate path of self-attainment (referring to the uncontaminated path), possesses Dharma nature. You are the definition of the result of separation, because you can establish it. The result of separation possesses Dharma nature, you are divided into two types: cessation through analysis obtained by the uncontaminated immediate path, and cessation through analysis obtained by the contaminated immediate path. 'Separation is the exhaustion of wisdom.' The fourth is the agent result, which is that by the power of a certain cause, a certain result is produced or obtained, and the result that arises or is obtained simultaneously or immediately after that cause, possesses Dharma nature. You are the definition of the agent result, because you are its establisher. It possesses Dharma nature, you are divided into two types: the agent result of production and the agent result of attainment. It possesses Dharma nature, you have the reason to be called the agent result, because you are a result similar to the action of an agent, therefore you are named as such. For example, like the medicine name 'Crow's Foot'. 'By the power of what, what is produced, this result is born from the action of the agent.' The commentary says: 'What is the action of the agent?' Answer: 'The action of any Dharma is the action of the agent, for example, like the medicine name "Crow's Foot" and the intoxicated elephant.'

So, 'Through what power is the cessation of characteristics obtained?' should be said. Therefore, regarding the direct teaching of that treatise, the King's Son explains that the effect of the person who has attained [it] is indirectly shown, while both arising and increasing are directly shown. Therefore, regarding the effect of the person of that dharma and the own-effect of that dharma, there are four possibilities: the pillar is the own-effect of the potter, but not his personal effect; the vase is both; the potter himself is neither; and the uninterrupted path (Sanskrit: Anantarya-mārga) is his personal effect, but not his own-effect, which is impossible, because if it is the personal effect of the potter, it must be his own-effect. If one thinks that this contradicts the four possibilities previously accepted, it does not contradict, because the individual examination cessation is the personal effect of the uninterrupted path, but not its own-effect. Therefore, it is easy to find the four possibilities applied to the uninterrupted path, while others are difficult to understand. Fifth, the own-effect is: any conditioned phenomenon, other than its own nature, any conditioned phenomenon that is not prior to that conditioned phenomenon, as the subject, you are the definition of the own-effect of that conditioned phenomenon, because you are its designator. Or, any result of that dharma, anything that did not occur prior to that dharma, as the subject, you are the definition of the own-effect of that dharma, because you are its designator. Here, it is necessary to say 'only the result of conditioned phenomena' because it is to cut off the unconditioned having an own-effect. It is necessary to say 'not prior' because to know that anything that occurred prior to any conditioned phenomenon, even though it is different in nature from it, is not its own-effect, because it is impossible for the cause to be earlier than the result, so it is said: 'The conditioned that is not prior, is only the own-effect of the conditioned.' Therefore, any conditioned phenomenon, if you are the result of that dharma, then you must be the own-effect of that dharma, which is not universally true, because the individual examination cessation is the result of the uninterrupted path, but not its own-effect. Because it is said to be its separation result, not its own-effect. Moreover, the selective word 'the conditioned that is not prior' is also because it is selected from the unconditioned, and only the conditioned is said to be the own-effect. Therefore, arising... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
