Because it is said in the scriptures 'Pratisaṃkhyā-nirodha (Tibetan: སོ་སོར་བརྟགས་པའི་འགོག་པ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: Pratisaṃkhyā-nirodha, Romanized Sanskrit: pratisaṃkhyā-nirodha, literal meaning: cessation through individual discernment)', so it is explained this way. Although the separation of conditioned phenomena (Sanskrit: saṃskṛta) is a result, for unconditioned phenomena (Sanskrit: asaṃskṛta), there are no such causes and results. Because if it is an unconditioned phenomenon, then it has no cause and no result. Because unconditioned phenomena do not have any of the six causes and five results. As it says in the auto-commentary: 'Why? Because it is impossible to have six kinds of causes, and it is also impossible to have five kinds of results.' Then, what is the reason why Pratisaṃkhyā-nirodha is a result? Because it is the separation result of the path of immediate attainment (Sanskrit: ānantarya-mārga) that can attain it, and it is also its agent result (Sanskrit: puruṣakāra-phala), because it is the attainment result (Sanskrit: prāpti-phala) attained through the power of the path of immediate attainment that can attain it. Then, is the path of immediate attainment that attains it its co-existent cause (Sanskrit: sahaja-hetu)? Because it (Pratisaṃkhyā-nirodha) is its result? This is not the same. If it is its co-existent cause, then it must be established as its co-existent cause from the perspective of it preventing production. However, unconditioned phenomena cannot be produced, so the discussion of whether it prevents production or not is not applicable. Then, is Pratisaṃkhyā-nirodha not the result of the path of immediate attainment that attains it? Because for the path of immediate attainment that attains Pratisaṃkhyā-nirodha, its attainment is its cause. This is also not pervasive, because it is the cause of its attainment that is separate from the cause that produces it. Because co-existent causes have both effective and ineffective types, and agent results also have both attainment and production types. As it says in the auto-commentary: 'Why is the path not acknowledged as the co-existent cause of separation? Because it is established as a nature that does not prevent production, and unconditioned phenomena are not related to production. Now, what is it or how is it a result? It is the result of the path, because it is attained through its power.' 'Then, only attainment is the result of the path because of its power, not separation.' 'For attainment, its power is different, and for separation, its power is also different. How does attainment have power? Because it produces. How does separation have power? Because it causes it to be attained.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thus it is. Therefore, the unconditioned (འདུས་མ་བྱས་, asaṃskṛta) is the operative cause (བྱེད་རྒྱུ་, karaṇahetu) of the conditioned (འདུས་བྱས་, saṃskṛta), because it abides in the nature of not obstructing arising. Therefore, its operative cause is without function. However, it is not the cause of the arising of the conditioned, because the unconditioned does not have the power to hold and ripen a result, because it is liberated from time. To this, the autocommentary says: 'How is the unconditioned the cause of the operative cause? By means of a thing that does not obstruct arising, it is the cause of the operative cause, but this does not have a result, because that which is liberated from time does not have the power to produce and ripen a result.' Second, the detailed explanation has four parts: explaining the connection between cause and result, determining the results individually, explaining the difference between holding and producing results, and explaining which result arises from which cause. The first is: 'Well then, which of the six causes are these five results the result of?' Knowable phenomena, there is a way of combining the six causes and the five results, the result of maturation (རྣམ་སྨིན་གྱི་འབྲས་བུ་, vipākaphala) is the result of the last of the six causes, the cause of maturation. The result of mastery (བདག་པོའི་འབྲས་བུ་, adhipatiphala) is the result of the first of the six causes, the operative cause. The result of similarity (རྒྱུ་མཐུན་གྱི་འབྲས་བུ་, niṣyandaphala) is the result of the two intermediate causes, the cause of equal status (སྐལ་མཉམ་, sabhāgahetu) and the pervasive cause (ཀུན་འགྲོ་, sarvatragahetu). The result of masculine action (སྐྱེས་བུ་བྱེད་འབྲས་, puruṣakāraphala) is considered to be the result of the two causes, the co-occurring cause (ལྷན་ཅིག་འབྱུང་རྒྱུ་, sahajātahetu) and the corresponding cause (མཚུངས་ལྡན་གྱི་རྒྱུ་, saṃprayuktahetu).' To this, (the verse says) 'The result of maturation is the last, the result of mastery is the first, similarity is equal status and pervasive, the result of masculine action is of the two.' That is to say, since the two causes, the co-occurring cause and the corresponding cause, do not have their own unique results to establish, the result of masculine action is merely placed as the share of the results of the two, but it is not that other causes do not have the result of masculine action, because whatever result occurs at the time of that cause or immediately after that cause is placed as the result of masculine action of that cause. The operative cause produces a result both at its own time and immediately after itself. The two, the cause of equal status and the pervasive cause, produce their own results immediately after themselves, therefore there is temporarily a result of masculine action. However, the result of maturation cannot be the result of masculine action of that cause of maturation, because the results of maturation are not produced at the time of their own cause of maturation or immediately after it.
