There are two: debate and questioning. The first is: contaminated karma included by either non-virtuous or virtuous contaminated dharmas, having the nature of 'you are the cause of maturation', because you can establish it as such. Therefore, the unspecified is not the cause of maturation, because it is weak, like a rotten seed. Non-contaminated karmas are also not the cause of maturation, because they are not moistened by craving, like a dry seed without moisture.' It is explained: 'The cause of maturation is only non-virtuous, virtuous, and contaminated dharmas.' The second is questioning: Then, is the so-called 'cause of maturation' established as the cause of maturation because it is the cause of the ripening of the fruit? Or is it established as the cause of maturation because it is the common basis of being both maturation and cause? If it is the former, then the statement 'eye consciousness is born from maturation' is not reasonable, because the eye is born from the cause of maturation, but not from maturation. If it is the latter, then the statement 'the eye is the maturation of karma' is not reasonable, because What is established as the cause of maturation for a common basis that is both maturation and cause? Because contaminated karma is not maturation.' The answer is: 'There is no fault, because it is enough to accept either of them.' It is explained: In the 'Self-Commentary' it says: 'Is the cause of maturation maturation? Or is maturation itself the cause of maturation? What is the difference? If the cause of maturation is maturation, then the statement 'the eye is born from maturation' will not be contradictory.' 'Why? Because it is born from karma, and karma is not the nature of maturation. If maturation itself is the cause, therefore it is the cause of maturation, then the statement 'the maturation of karma' will be contradictory. Why? Because maturation is the cause, and maturation is not the nature of karma.' It has been said before that either of the two is acceptable.' How was it said before? In the 'Treasury of Elements' it is said like this: 'Then, listen. Because it is the cause of maturation, it is said to be the cause of maturation, but saying that the eye produced maturation is not contradictory, because it is born from the cause of maturation, so it is said to have produced maturation, which is omitting the intermediate words.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then, why is it also said to be the 'cause of Vipāka (異熟, different ripening)'? Because they are both the cause and the Vipāka fruit. There is no contradiction in saying they are the 'cause of Vipāka,' because defiled actions ripen at the time of the fruit, hence they are called 'Vipāka.' Or, because they are the cause of their own fruit—Vipāka—the name of the fruit is attributed to the cause. This is how it is explained. In the 'Self-Commentary,' 'Born from Vipāka and, the five within those born from cause,' among them, 'born from the cause of Vipāka,' means 'born from Vipāka,' which is omitting the intermediate words, like saying 'the cart of the ox cart.' Or, the action that causes ripening is called 'Vipāka,' because they will ripen. Or, it is attributing the name of the fruit to the cause. Therefore, the Vipāka fruit of virtuous and non-virtuous actions, you have the reason to be called 'Vipāka,' because you are different from the cause of Vipāka and will ripen, so it is said that way. In the 'Self-Commentary' it says: 'What is the meaning of being called "Vipāka"? Ripening differently from the cause is Vipāka.' Third, concluding from the perspective of time: Knowable phenomena, the concurrent cause and the pervasive cause must be in either the past or the present, because they do not have the future. Because these two both have the fruit of the similar cause, and in order to generate the fruit of the similar cause, they must generate the subsequent self-fruit. If it is the future, then it cannot generate the subsequent self-fruit, because the future has no order of before and after. The simultaneous cause, the equal cause, and the Vipāka cause are the three times, because these three each possess all three times. The efficient cause has all three times and also non-time, because it has both conditioned and unconditioned phenomena.' This is how it is explained. 'Concurrent and pervasive, two times in nature, those three are of a three-time nature.' Second, explaining the fruit, divided into two parts: brief indication and detailed explanation. First is the brief indication: Knowable phenomena, have a way of establishing the fruit, because among all conditioned phenomena and the three unconditioned phenomena, separation (i.e., discriminative cessation) and so on are established as the fruit, as the 'Self-Commentary' says: 'What are the phenomena of the fruit? All conditioned phenomena and...' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
