What arises? For a person who has attained the forbearance of knowing the Dharma (chos shes pa'i bzod pa) regarding suffering (sdug bsngal), it is like (the forbearance of knowing the Dharma regarding suffering) is inferior. As it says in the Ratnāvalī (gyal sras las): 'The attainment of knowing the Dharma regarding suffering, whatever Dharma that arose previously, arises simultaneously with the subsequent moment, the subsequent moment (of Dharma) having the characteristic of the subsequent knowledge of forbearance regarding suffering, and so forth, up to the subsequent knowledge of forbearance regarding the path arising simultaneously. The attainment of the forbearance of knowing the Dharma regarding suffering is the co-emergent cause with equal potential.' These doubts and analyses in the commentaries are meaningful and have clarified the wisdom, but I would like to ask again: For the basis of an Arhat, regarding the Arhat path of non-returner (phyir mi 'ong) that is about to become, is it necessary to acknowledge that its basis is the co-emergent cause of the non-returner path of non-returner that has just become, which is a non-leaking path? Because it has only one co-emergent cause, whereas there is no such case in the path of a learner. If you acknowledge it, then it contradicts the superior not being the co-emergent cause of the inferior. If there is no such co-emergent cause, then does it not contradict acknowledging that all conditioned phenomena except for the first non-leaking moment have a co-emergent cause? This question should be asked to the Indian scholars. Furthermore, the attainment of the Dharma-knowledge of suffering (sdug bsngal chos shes) is the co-emergent cause of the Dharma-knowledge-forbearance of suffering (sdug bsngal rjes bzod) in the continuum of the Dharma-knowledge-forbearance, because the attainment of the Dharma-knowledge-forbearance in that continuum is distinguished by being expanded through a co-emergent cause that is more powerful than the attainment of the Dharma-knowledge. The reason is established, as it says in the Ratnāvalī: 'Therefore, the subsequent moment that arises before it, and other attainments of the forbearance of knowing the Dharma regarding suffering that arise simultaneously, even though they are greatly expanded through causes, are only inferior.' If the above is not pervasive, then it should not be so, because the Dharma-knowledge-forbearance of suffering is the co-emergent cause of both (Dharma-knowledge and Dharma-knowledge-forbearance), and it is acknowledged that (the Dharma-knowledge) arising simultaneously with the attainment of the Dharma-knowledge of suffering is not its co-emergent cause. For others, there may be no cause, but we think that the attainment of the Dharma-knowledge-forbearance of suffering that arises simultaneously with the Dharma-knowledge of suffering, although it is its co-emergent cause, is different from the Dharma-knowledge, so there is a distinction. May the intention of the prince (referring to Nāgārjuna) be fulfilled. Fourth, the corresponding cause (mtshungs ldan rgyu), has two aspects: definition and doubt analysis. First, the main one that makes its retinue, the mind and mental factors that have the same basis as the mind.

如是宣说:‘相应因是心识等,以及所依相同的(sems byung rten mtshungs can rnams so)。’

A phenomenon (chos can) is the corresponding cause (mtsungs ldan gyi rgyu yin te) of the main consciousness (sems) that accompanies you (khyod rang), because you are the same as it in five aspects (rnampa lnga). Similarly, the main consciousness that arises as an accompanying mental factor (sems byung) and has the same basis (rten) is a phenomenon, you are its corresponding cause, because you are a cognition (rig pa) that is the same as it in five aspects. Therefore, a cognition that is the same in five aspects is a phenomenon, you are the definition (mtshan nyid yin te) of the corresponding cause, because you can be established as such. Thus it is said: 'The corresponding cause is consciousness, etc., and those that have the same basis (sems byung rten mtshungs can rnams so).' Then, here, 'those that have the same basis (rten mtshungs can rnams so),' what is the necessity of mentioning only the basis? There is a necessity for this, because both consciousness and mental factors are corresponding causes that have the same basis, while the other four are only similar corresponding causes. Because if the basis is the same, then all five aspects must be complete, while the others are not necessarily so. For example, the consciousness and mental factors that rely on the empowering condition (bdag rkyen) eye faculty (mig la) also have the same object (dmigs), aspect (rnam), substance (rdzas), and time (dus). Although the object, aspect, substance, and time of blue (sngon po), etc., are the same, the basis is not necessarily the same. Thus it is said, in the auto-commentary (rang 'grel) it says: 'Whatever consciousness and mental factors have the same basis, they are mutually corresponding causes.' Here, in the Chim Tika (mchims Tika) it says: 'Simultaneous cause and effect (dus mnyam pa'i rgyu 'bras) is the definition of the co-emergent cause (lhan cig 'byung rgyu) other than the corresponding cause,' this is not the word of a wise person, because if it is a corresponding cause, then it must be a co-emergent cause. Because the auto-commentary says: 'Whatever is a corresponding cause is also a co-emergent cause.' Then, what is the reason and necessity for explaining them separately like this? From the perspective of mutually producing results, it is a co-emergent cause, for example, guests help each other to travel on the road and are mutually consistent in Dharma. From the perspective of being the same in five aspects, it is a corresponding cause, for example, guests on the road are the same and similar in actions such as food and bathing. Thus it is said, in the auto-commentary it says: 'Whatever consciousness and mental factors have the same basis, in the sense of mutually producing results, are co-emergent causes, just as guests travel together on the road with mutual strength.'
