These appearances, exactly like autumn clouds, reveal that worldly happiness and prosperity are meaningless, illusory, momentarily impermanent, and subject to change. All deluded actions are identified as the sole cause of creating the suffering of samsara, becoming a natural teacher, so the initial sense of renunciation seems to arise involuntarily. In the spring of my fourteenth year, my maternal grandfather, Amye Atra, passed away. He had recited about two hundred million mantras and had a peaceful and comfortable mind. Due to auspicious signs at the time of death, on the day the body was transported, a clear sky had a white rainbow connecting east and west, and I thought he had attained liberation as in my previous dreams. At the time of his death, he wanted to recite a hundred recitations of the "Klong Gye Ritual," but he was saddened that he only completed eighty, so I promised to make up the twenty, but soon after I had to go elsewhere, so it was not accomplished. From a young age, I had a great desire to learn painting and medicine. I was skilled at painting, creating images of Orgyen Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), the Eight Manifestations of Guru Rinpoche, and Vairochana. Just hearing the name "Gonpo Bernakchen" (Mahakala in Black Cloak) made me very happy, so I asked others what Rinchen Godan looked like and drew him as well. I roughly memorized the channels and elements of the "Root Tantra of the Later Tradition." I also learned most of the herbal identification from a doctor named Karma Phuntsok. One night in my fifteenth year, I don't remember the exact date, I had a dream. In the dream, Orgyen Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), dressed in Zahor attire, in a halo covered with red and yellow light, shining like the sun, a ray of light like a mirror struck me, and I felt a dizziness, almost fainting. When I woke up, some women said, "Look at the sky, the Queen of Existence with a hundred heads and a thousand arms has come." I thought, "Why do I feel afraid and dare not look up?" When I looked up, the sky was filled with rainbows, and I only felt that I could vaguely see a figure, and then I woke up. This happened when Dege Tsewang Dorje Rigdzin was on the throne, and the chamberlains of Chuma were taking turns in office. They took the opportunity to levy taxes on the nomads of Ngari, carry out robberies, set up checkpoints, beg, pass off inferior goods as superior, forcibly impose burdens, and force us into service.

Due to the great famine, about one-third of the villages in each Dzong (county) were emptied by people fleeing the famine. My uncle, although he had self-sufficient property, was only interested in stealing, robbing, and fighting with others. Because of a quarrel with someone, a dispute arose with a person from the Dege (now Dege County, Sichuan) representative's attendant residence. The villages suffered heavy losses. Because of the resentment there, during the monastery's exorcism ceremony the following year, the monastic and lay community unanimously decided to execute the person who had subdued the Mongolians the previous year. The blood debt of this matter was sued to the previous representative the following year. Because subduing the Mongolians led to death, the punishment was severe, and all families, large and small, were ruined. My father was also imprisoned, and so on, suffering continuously. In general, because the taxes were heavy, my mother said that you should not stay in this dilapidated home for even one day from now on. Go to a monastery, and she can also become self-sufficient by the way. Although she said that, I didn't think of a suitable monastery at that time. In the spring of my sixteenth year, I was sent to my father, who was in the Chöde Phodrang (monastery residence) in Chamdo. There, I copied scriptures and recited them in the spring and summer. I learned the lines and color formulas of painting and sculpture, as well as rough painting, from a craftsman named Lhagar, who was the head of Chamdo. My mother's kindness in raising me was profound. She freed me from the prison of the cycle of existence and became my virtuous friend in entering the Buddhist path. Her kindness is difficult to repay! From a young age, I was timid and gentle. No matter who ordered what, whether I could do it or not, I was obedient, so everyone, good or bad, liked me and was kind to me. In particular, Tsephel, who was in the Chöde Ponkhang (religious estate office) at that time, liked me very much and said that he needed a secretary for the time being, so I went to his side in late summer. Passing through Wobshi Rutog. I went to Dege's summer camp Lhalung Khud and Ritam. There, Lama Jigme Losal from Shechen Monastery came and was entrusted to tell the history of Bon, so he told various heard Bon stories for a long time. The Lama said, Losal, you are very eloquent. At that time, the old official said that this person is very clever and should learn a culture.
