Please speak of those unbearable things. After the Sangha has tolerated and granted permission, the Sangha grants a forty-day leave to the one called "so-and-so." If nothing is said like this, it is accepted as it is. After saying this, the one who has received permission from the Sangha, when leaving, should also go after being blessed in front of a Bhikshu within the boundary. The mantra for that is the same as the previous seven-day ritual, replacing "for the sake of Dharma-possessing actions, to the Sangha" with "for the sake of the Sangha or Dharma-possessing actions, going to the distance of the eight-day or forty-day boundary." Only this point is different. This summer blessing should only be done within the boundary; if it goes beyond the boundary, the blessing will not be established, so it should not be done. After the summer retreat has been undertaken, if two Posadhas have been performed, then the Pravāraṇā can be done. Therefore, if any Śrāmaṇera or Bhikshu needs to leave together within six days, they can request Pravāraṇā from one Bhikshu and then leave. Third, concerning the basis of the Pravāraṇā of the Dharma of Purification, there are two: the scope of understanding and the practical application. The reason why Pravāraṇā is called the Dharma of Purification is that the "Dharma" in this case refers to the object of the mind. Therefore, on the day of Pravāraṇā, all the manifest transgressions that have become the object of the minds of all the Sangha members are purified because virtuous thoughts manifest. Considering this, it is said that Pravāraṇā is done for the sake of the Dharma of Purification. First, the scope of understanding is divided into two: general and specific. The general case is further divided into two: Pravāraṇā of transgressions and Pravāraṇā of objects. The Pravāraṇā of transgressions is further divided into four: the time of doing Pravāraṇā, the object to whom Pravāraṇā is done, by whom Pravāraṇā is done, and the necessity of doing Pravāraṇā. First, if the early summer retreat is undertaken, then Pravāraṇā is done on the fifteenth day of the middle autumn month; if the later summer retreat is undertaken, then it is done on the fifteenth day of the late autumn month. Because it is said in the sutra, "On the last day of all summers." The nature of Pravāraṇā itself is to open the occasion for all Sangha members to discuss transgressions through the three doors of seeing, hearing, and suspecting. Second, the object to whom Pravāraṇā is done is to all Sangha members in the ten directions, not just to those residing within one boundary.
