etc. The abbot ascends the throne, and the monks return to their seats. Then, the two summer retreat masters face outwards, each with their cushions, and sit facing each other, with three monks taking vows in turn, which also applies to novices. Even if the Sangha is very large and many summer retreat masters have been appointed, it should be inferred according to the previous rules. It should be known that at these times, one should add the designation "I, the Bhikshu, named..." or "I, the Shramanera, named..." If there is no special place, one should vow, "I will stay here for three summer months," and this will also constitute staying. It is said in the scriptures, "If one does not promise to stay but is not allowed to leave, then it is considered staying." Therefore, those who stay for the sake of escaping and practicing, or for any kind of religious activity, but do not travel around, are actually considered to be staying in summer retreat. After all the Shramaneras and Bhikshus have completed their vows, the abbot will exhort them as on the previous day, and then perform dedication, prayers, auspicious circumambulation, and other rituals, and finally conclude. Third, after taking the summer retreat vows in this way, how should one practice? Every half month, check the residence to see if it has been used, etc. These are actions for individuals. The common actions of the Sangha are to diligently read, listen, contemplate, and practice meditation. Avoid cumbersome things such as changing bowls, avoid discussing transgressions that lead to quarrels, avoid distributing gains, and avoid fighting. Maintain the monastery through planning, etc. Do not stay overnight outside the boundary. In short, recite the Sutra of the Three Heaps as usual, take ordination, and hold the Posadha every half month. Symbolically spend time in accordance with the Dharma through these things that should be done continuously. Fourth, there are two kinds of rituals for not breaking the summer retreat: the ritual of bestowing seven days of blessing for the sake of an individual, and the ritual of bestowing blessings for eight to forty days after obtaining permission for the sake of the Sangha. The first is: if one needs to leave the boundary for reasons in accordance with the Dharma, except for the last six days of the summer retreat, an individual may be allowed to leave after receiving one to seven days of blessing. The reasons in accordance with the Dharma are stated in the Vinaya-Sutra of the Garland: especially for the marriage of sons and daughters, and for parents and the Three Jewels.

Furthermore, if it is necessary to accomplish the affairs of the teacher and so on, one can bless for seven days, or even more. As it is said. Moreover, if distinguishing the Sangha, for the purpose of reconciliation and so on, it is also necessary to compulsorily observe the summer retreat. Furthermore, even without leaving the boundary for a single day, the summer retreat can be broken. If within the boundary, one distinguishes between the Dharma side and the non-Dharma side, staying on the non-Dharma side until dawn, the summer retreat will be broken. As it is said: Because of being overly attached to that view, having gone to the non-Dharma side, it will be broken at dawn. Therefore, the ritual for blessing seven days is: Within the boundary, a Bhikshu possessing the nine qualities goes to the presence of any summer retreat holder, with cushions and so on, through learning, prostration, and standing bows, with intimate words: Please allow me to bless for one year and so on. He also replies. Squatting and folding hands. Venerable one, please listen. I, named so-and-so, in this place including the inner boundary, have vowed to stay for the first three months of summer. I, named so-and-so, for the sake of some Dharma-related affairs, bless to leave the boundary for seven days, and to return before then. I am staying here for the summer retreat, and my summer retreat place is here. Answer three times in this way, and be skillful. Similarly, depending on the need, one can change the wording to one day or two days, etc. A Shramanera cannot be given permission for seven days at once. The mantra for blessing a Shramanera and a Bhikshu is the same, and the object of the blessing request for both is only the summer retreat holder Bhikshu. The second case is: If it is necessary to go out for Sangha and other Dharma affairs that cannot be completed in seven days, then after obtaining permission from the Sangha for forty days, bless for any number of days between eight and forty and then go out. Here, saying forty days is because it is calculated as the longest time to return before the end of the summer retreat, and the rest can be applied analogously. The ritual for this is: If it is for the Sangha, then the worker asks: Venerable one, are you willing to be blessed for forty days for the sake of the Sangha, to go outside the boundary? He also replies: I am willing.
