Therefore, it generates immeasurable merit. As it says in the sutras and tantras, it is boundless. Among the three supports of the Buddha, the merit of building a Buddha image, as it says in the chapter of the Tathagata's Image: With earth, lime, wood, stone, copper, iron, gold, silver, beryl, crystal, red pearl, the essence of gemstones, lead, conch, coral, incense, cloth, wooden board, or on a wall, one should build the image of the Tathagata. Repairing the broken parts, mending the cracks, if one makes the image of the Tathagata, one will not be born into any of the lower castes, the castes that commit evil, and the castes with wrong views, and one will not have any incomplete limbs. Even if one has committed the five heinous crimes, if one gains faith in the Tathagata and makes an image, then the suffering of sentient beings in hell caused by that karma will be experienced in a small part, and one will surely be liberated from any of the three vehicles. For example, if a person touches something impure, washes it thoroughly clean, and then applies perfume, then the unpleasant smell will disappear. Similarly, the sins of committing the five heinous crimes will also disappear. Even if one possesses the path of the ten non-virtuous actions, if one gains faith in the Tathagata and makes an image, then his sins, just as a pile of fire burns oil and even the smoke is not visible, his sins will also disappear. As it says in the "White Lotus Sutra": Some make images of precious gems there, a body endowed with the thirty-two marks. Whoever makes it for that reason, all of those will attain enlightenment. Some use seven precious gems there, some likewise use copper and tin, making images of the Sugatas, all of those will attain enlightenment. Whether it is lead, iron, or even earth, making images of the Sugatas, hiring people to make lovely clay sculptures, all of those will attain enlightenment.
