Seeing that they were dressed as practitioners, and that the Berchan (Tibetan: བེར་ཅན།) siblings and the glorious Lord of the Field Protectors had also appeared in this place, and that the lifeblood of the teachings depended entirely on the practice lineage, and many other common and uncommon necessities. First, the Dharma King himself did a retreat and blessed this place, and then appointed the great accomplished Kagyü teachings holder known as Sakya Lodrö (Tibetan: སཱཙྪ་བློ་གྲོས།) to this place, and had him practice the Six Dharmas of Niguma and Mahamudra for three years. After that, he appointed someone named Tokden Öchung Lama Karma Tengye (Tibetan: རྟོགས་ལྡན་འོད་གཅུང་བླ་མ་ཀརྨ་བསྟན་རྒྱས།) as the lama, and specially built a residence including a dozen practitioners, and instructed by decree how long they must stay in this place, and entrusted his mind. While the Dharma King was considering the benefit of others, this place existed well. The Györu Madman (Tibetan: གཡོ་རུ་སྨྱོན་པ།) who went to the Dakinis from Tsurphu (Tibetan: མཚུར་ཕུ།) Lotus Joy Fortress (Tibetan: པདྨ་ཁྱུད་རྫོང་།) also attained accomplishment in this place and went to the upper regions, which shows that there are many long-lived hermits with realization and complete purity living here. It is said that as long as one occupies this practice place, one will at least recite one hundred million deity mantras, and the old people still say that now. However, because the sun of the teachings rose to Tushita Heaven (Tibetan: དགའ་ལྡན།), the wealth of the Labrang (Tibetan: བླ་བྲང་།) decreased slightly, making it difficult to provide food to the practitioners in this place, so the number decreased. When the nephew Rinpoche Wangyal Dorje (Tibetan: དབོན་སྤྲུལ་རིན་པོ་ཆེ་དབང་རྒྱལ་རྡོ་རྗེ།) propagated the Dharma, he deviated slightly from the operation of ascetic meditation because he was mainly engaged in the operation of activities. In order to compensate for this, he thought that if he established a special group of ascetics, it would also make unparalleled contributions to the precious teachings of the Kagyü lineage, so when he examined the place to be established, considering that the soil and stones for the houses in this area were scarce, the terrain was inconvenient, and the houses were remote, it was difficult to build tall, spacious, solid, durable, clean and tidy temples and monasteries for the monks, so he asked the Thirteenth Dharma King about the examination results of the three places including Dungkar Gang (Tibetan: དུང་དཀར་སྒང་།). As the examination result fell on Lingtö (Tibetan: གླིང་སྟོད།), Rigdzin Dorje Drakpo (Tibetan: རིག་འཛིན་རྡོ་རྗེ་དྲག་པོ།) subdued the land and established the great practice room Kagyü Darre (Tibetan: སྒྲུབ་བརྒྱུད་དར་ར).

Gyaling was newly built together with its supports. Starting from arranging fifteen practitioners, each doing three years of retreat in three directions, along with the necessities for meditation and attendants. The supports of this place naturally dissolved into the dharmadhatu. Kyabgon Dorje Chang himself repeatedly said that this place should not decline, so with the efforts of the workers, it was as if the thought became the body and fell into the empty space. I had a strong desire in my heart to go to a secluded retreat, so in the summer waxing moon of my twenty-eighth year, I went there for the sake of Lhasang (a kind of smoke offering). At that time, the road was not yet open, and my companions and I did not know how to walk, but at dawn, we recited the Seven-Line Prayer as we went. Behind the Great Retreat House, a vulture landed. When we saw it, we bowed and went up. Wherever the vulture flew, we followed, and it walked to the top of the mountain behind this hermitage and then flew east. Then we looked back and saw the ruins of the hermitage, so we went down there and performed a grand Lhasang (a kind of smoke offering). A rain of mixed flowers like snowflakes fell, etc., which was very auspicious and made my heart happy. The path that the vulture had taken was also named Vulture Pass, which is now this steep pass. After that, whenever I came, auspicious signs seemed to appear. In particular, in the autumn of my thirtieth year, the form of the retreat house was symbolically repaired. There were only barely enough retreat supplies and tea bricks, and some tattered clothes. Apart from the supports symbolizing body, speech, and mind, there was no property, but gradually life became such that there was no need to beg. Wisdom was clear, and virtuous deeds increased. First, according to the instructions requested from Kyabje, I completed the preliminary and main practices of Lama Konchok Chidu (Guru, Yidam, and Dakini combined), for more than three years. After that, I successively practiced Lama Sangdu (Guru Secret Gathering) and Gongdu (Mind Gathering), the Eight Herukas of the Kagye Deshek Dupa, and other old and new Nyingma terma, as well as the generation and completion stages of the upper and lower tantras of the new tantras such as Chakrasamvara, Hevajra, and Guhyasamaja.
