What need is there to speak of small matters for this short life? Even for the sake of Dharma, one should not act contrary to Dharma. To benefit others permanently is virtue; whatever harms others in this life or the next is sin. There is no certainty in merely seeking temporary self-interest. If the roots of virtue increase, the mindstream will be liberated. When the mindstream is liberated, realization will naturally arise. Those who do not understand cause and effect and have not tamed their own minds deceive themselves and others with the reputation of being learned and accomplished. If one properly practices abandoning and adopting the infallible cause and effect, that is the correct view of worldly people. All of samsara and nirvana are the self-nature of the mind; in reality, they do not exist apart from illusion. Although they do not actually exist, we experience various kinds of happiness and suffering. These are taken because we grasp at phenomena as real. If we cut the root of grasping at reality, we will realize emptiness, and the wisdom that transcends the world will arise. The nature of all dharmas is the clear light of Suchness, equally pervading self, others, samsara, and nirvana. One's own mind is primordially the Dharmakaya. If one knows one's own face, there is no separate result. If certainty arises from practice, that is the view. The view that is merely spoken of is just words. Do not seek the view externally; look within. First, look at the self-nature of the mind that grasps. When the grasping agent dissolves into space, the object of grasping will naturally become pure. The subsequent thought has not arisen, and the previous one has ceased. In that very moment—fleeting, dim, and vague—recognize your own face and do not fabricate. Maintain clarity and awareness without interruption, always guarding it. Whatever thoughts arise, such as afflictions, do not think, "This is a thought," and try to alter it. Cherish looking at the face of the one who recognizes. From the mere appearance, without identifying "this is this" or "that is not that," when one realizes that one's own nature is self-luminous, it is said that appearances are liberated in their own place. If there is a target to meditate on, it is artificial. Artificial meditation does not realize the meaning of the natural state. Since there is nothing at all to meditate on, leave it in its own place. Do not be distracted for a moment; rely on mindfulness and awareness. In the uncorrected, ordinary, natural awareness, the intention of the Buddhas of the three times is gathered. When one properly obtains realization of the natural state, skill and radiance will arise as compassion to benefit others. Effortlessly, spontaneously accomplishing this is also the nature of Dharma. But nowadays, most people are lost in verbal views, and some foolishly meditate, going astray on the path of pride. They only praise bodhicitta.

They also do not take small acts of altruism into their hands. They speak of generating Bodhicitta but cherish their own benefit. The image of a Bodhisattva contradicts the practice of the Great Vehicle. Without compassion, one strays onto the path of Hearers and Solitary Realizers. Let alone benefiting others, one's own benefit will not ultimately be achieved. So-called scholars, virtuous ones, realized ones, great meditators, accomplished ones, etc., their pride is the enemy of compassion. Abandon pride and examine your own faults. Speak truthful words with an honest heart, and constantly generate the altruistic intention to benefit others. If there is actual benefit, take whatever benefit there is into your hands. Dedicate the roots of virtue to the cause of great Bodhi. Although all the Buddha's teachings say that accumulating merit and purifying obscurations are the means, in the swift path of Secret Mantra, the sole monarch is deep devotion to the Lama. The root Lama is superior to all Buddhas. Having ascertained that he is the essence of the embodiment of all the Three Jewels, no matter how you see his actions, good or bad, may you not have even a hair's breadth of wrong view or doubt. Such decisive and intense devotion is extremely important. The realization of the nature of reality, emptiness, may be high or low, but it follows the degree of devotion, great or small. The meaning of this is clear from the Tantras, the biographies of accomplished ones, and the signs of one's own experiences. Seeing faults in the Lama's actions is a sign that you yourself are obscured by delusion and wrong views. If you are overcome by that, you will go to the Vajra Hell. In general, seeing the faults of others is seeing your own faults. An ugly face is reflected in a mirror. The mirror is not at fault; it is the fault of your own face. Knowing this, and being without partiality, when pure perception is mastered, there is no need to seek a pure realm externally, such as manifest joy and bliss. The body and the realm are found from one's own mind. The aspiration for ultimate liberation will be accomplished. To fulfill the wishes of Jamthang Rinpoche and his disciples for the sacred Dharma, these instructions in verse form, which arose spontaneously, are offered with great reverence for the essential meaning of definitive truth, and are in the image of a renunciant who meditates on the meaning. Spoken by the Kusali named Lodro Thaye (Intelligence Without Limit) in Kunzang Dechen Odsel Ling (Samantabhadra's Great Bliss Clear Light Island). May virtue cause experience and realization to increase like the waxing moon! May goodness and excellence increase! May there be auspiciousness! O Lord, glorious and precious Lama, I pray to you with heartfelt longing. Please bless me with words and meaning. Because I do not possess the qualities of abandonment and realization in my own mind-stream, it is difficult to speak instructions to others, but from the depths of my heart, I hold you in reverence and with vows.
