One should transform afflictions. When desire arises, meditate steadfastly on Amitabha, without differentiating between oneself and the thought of desire. All outer environments are Sukhavati, all inner contents are Amitabha, and all objects of attachment are also meditated upon as Amitabha. One should not have desire for deities, and if desire arises on its own, it contradicts the samaya of mantra. When desire itself transforms into the realm of the Victorious One, Amitabha, rejoice that the affliction has become a friend of wisdom. Without letting conceptual thoughts run wild, generate diligence and meditate in this way. For anger, the outer environment is Abhirati, the inner content is Akshobhya. For ignorance, the realm is Ghanavyuha, the inner content is Vairochana. For pride, the realm is Shrisamutkata, the inner content is Ratnasambhava. For jealousy, the realm is Karmaparipurana, the inner content is Amoghasiddhi. Other methods of meditation can be inferred from the method of transforming desire. Furthermore, those who mainly practice wind-mind training, such as Mahamudra and Dzogchen, need to understand the nature of afflictions and turn them into the path. That is, it is not by guarding the conceptual thought itself that it becomes the path, but by experiencing the conceptual thought, at the fleeting moment when it arises, without clinging to it, cultivating the naked awareness of rigpa-emptiness, which is without foundation and naturally liberated, that it becomes the path. The so-called "self-knowing of nature" is like cutting a reed and seeing that the inside is empty. Even if there are other reeds, one knows that they are also empty in the same way. When a conceptual thought of affliction arises, instead of following the place where the conceptual thought arises, turn the attention inward to the awareness of the one who is arising, and then the conceptual thought will become unreal, naturally liberated, and one will see emptiness. By repeatedly experiencing this, all the elaborations of conceptual thoughts will cease, and there is no need to doubt whether it is emptiness or not. Since it is emptiness, emptiness will not bring any benefit or harm, so there is no need to accept or reject, be happy or sad, hope or fear, whether the affliction arises or not. The three—arising, recognizing, and liberating—will occur simultaneously. In general, for any conceptual thought or affliction, beginners should focus like threading a needle, not follow it, not continue it, and not cling to whether it is liberated or not, but guard the nature of the one who is arising.

It is necessary to do so. If you presume to be liberated and let your mind wander, your mind will become more and more dull. Once stability is attained, we don't need to fabricate liberation ourselves. It will go to liberation on its own. We, due to the fact that the consciousness of the five senses has not ceased, and the mind with afflictions has not been abandoned, although it is impossible that afflictions will not arise when encountering objects, do not follow the afflictions. Do not let it succeed, even if afflictions arise in the first moment, try to catch up with mindfulness in the second moment, and then in the third moment, use one of the three methods of abandonment, transformation, and knowledge to guide it onto the right path. Do not block the arising of thoughts. Thinking that you must block them and that they should not arise is a self-deceiving idea. All thoughts are artificial. To say non-artificial means that you must be separated from all thoughts. No matter how many thoughts arise, like rain falling into the ocean, they are liberated in appearance emptiness, unborn, so there is no idea of blocking. Even if thoughts do not arise, like the sky after the clouds have cleared, you remain in the state of awareness emptiness and naturalness, so there is no idea of fabrication. In short, always maintain the natural state of awareness, without needing to do too many trivial things. One medicine for a hundred diseases. To maintain this state, it is most important not to be separated from devout respect and mindfulness awareness. If you have these two, blessings, realizations, compassion, pure appearances, etc., will all arise along the way, so strive to always maintain this state with devout respect and mindfulness awareness. In particular, in the Unsurpassed Tantra it says: Just as water enters the ear, and is drawn out by the water itself; just as a wound burned by fire is treated with fire; use the afflictions themselves to subdue the afflictions, this is the meditation of reversal. For those with desire, practice with your own body as the expedient teaching, and with the body of another as the profound path of the messenger. For those with hatred, use wrathful mantras to slay the enemies of the doctrine who possess the ten perfections. Do not abandon sleep, but dissolve the subtle and coarse light into the central channel. Abandoning ordinary clinging and thoughts, hold the pride of the deity with the three doors of body, speech, and mind. Pray to accomplish the deeds of liberation of all the Buddhas and their children alone, and transform jealousy into the path. The complete knowledge of the nature of all things, and the purity of bodhicitta are indispensable. In general, the path of supreme yoga is not a realm that ordinary people can enter, but even just hearing and generating faith can make you a vessel for the profound Dharma.
