Even though one has power, if one does none of these three and surrenders one's life to the enemy, that is the height of foolishness, worse than livestock. Similarly, we have been killed countless times in samsara and the lower realms. We will be killed in the future. Recognizing that the enemy that is killing us now is the five poisons of affliction, beginners should flee. Having realized the nature of reality, fight. Having gained stability, take them as friends, thereby taking them onto the path. If one does not possess any of these three paths and treats afflictions as playthings, one will undoubtedly be thrown into the lower realms. Fleeing is like the path of abandoning afflictions. Fighting is like the path of transformation. Treating them like relatives is like the path of recognizing self-nature. Knowing these things but not striving to practice, and letting the mind be controlled by afflictions, is even more foolish than surrendering one's life to the enemy, wasting the purpose of practicing Dharma. Furthermore, like this example, one must first recognize the poison that will certainly cause death. Having recognized it, one must quickly move far away. Vidyadharas transform the poison into essence and consume it. Peacocks do not need either of these two; merely by eating it, they become radiant. Similarly, as soon as an affliction that will certainly sever the life force of liberation arises in the mind, one must recognize it. It is not enough to merely recognize it; if one's wisdom is weak, one must abandon it as in the Sutras and Vinaya. If one's wisdom is strong, one must transform it as in the outer tantras. If one is a yogi with extremely strong wisdom, one should not abandon it but take it onto the path, as in the inner tantras. If a beginner jumps like a tiger jumps, he will harm himself, so taking desire onto the path is merely a wish. The key is to cultivate the intention of recognizing self-nature in its scattered state. Attachment is the root of samsara. If left unchecked, it will connect with the five aggregates. Anger and all other faults are guides. Abandoning them cuts off the proximate causes of the five realms. If one knows how to take them onto the path, one will accomplish the bliss-emptiness Dharmakaya. The accumulation of attachment is as easy as a mountain, but a moment of anger is not like that. Merely arising for a moment, anger destroys all the roots of virtue accumulated over many eons. If one recognizes self-nature, that is the Sambhogakaya of clarity and emptiness. If one does not recognize it, it will be destroyed.

Strive diligently in abandoning! The source of all afflictions is ignorance. If there is no ocean, from where will the spring of water flow? If there is no darkness, why carry the wrong path? Although the depth of ignorance and darkness is very deep, if the sun of wisdom rises, there is no difficulty. Abide in equanimity in your own awareness! If you have qualities, there is no need for arrogance. The wisdom of the wise is like the vastness of the sky, accommodating all good and bad, big and small, without narrowness. If you have no qualities but are arrogant, then you will quickly condemn yourself. If arrogance arises when you have a little merit, it is an obstacle of the demon, which diminishes the existing merit, and it will be difficult to generate merit in the future, and the benefit of others will be interrupted. When thinking about the qualities of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, it is like comparing the light of the sun and moon with the light of a firefly. It is very important for a practitioner not to be arrogant. If you give rise to jealousy even once towards the merit, power, and benefit of others, then your own merit, power, and benefit will be swept away as if with a broom. If someone is better than you, what is the use of being jealous? It is the result of not accumulating merit yourself. If you are equal to yourself, what is the need for jealousy? Each enjoys their own karmic results separately. Many practitioners are destroyed by great jealousy. Therefore, strive to subdue self-grasping. If you let afflictions run wild, you are an ordinary person. If you suppress the head of afflictions, you are an ascetic. If afflictions arise as wisdom, you are a yogi. Abandoning, transforming, and knowing these three, measure your own wisdom. Never let afflictions run wild. Nowadays, there are many who say they are practitioners, but because of the times, there are few who can subdue afflictions. Associating with realized beings who have afflictions is like mixing good milk with sourness. Even if your own mind is pure, it will become bad, so cherish mindfulness, awareness, and caution as precious jewels. Even if you enter the Dharma gate, if you do not know the key points of view, meditation, and conduct, or if you know but cannot practice, then beginners should abandon afflictions according to the meaning of the Sutras and Vinaya. When desire arises, the object of desire is covered with a thin layer of outer skin, inside is pale red flesh, bright red blood, yellow pus, mucus, phlegm, urine, feces, etc., which are repulsive with thirty-two impure things, and the stench is unbearable, think that there is no difference from the opened entrails of dogs and pigs. If this does not subside, then contemplate the object of desire as a corpse, rotten, blue, and putrid.
