There are many kinds of mandalas, but mainly the great scholars Buddhaguhya and Kambala, etc., explain Mount Meru, the four continents, eight subcontinents, seven royal treasures, treasure vase, sun and moon, as twenty-three heaps. Among them, Manjushrikirti replaces the treasure vase with his own body, and Vimalamitra makes the offering of all treasures such as the blue scepter as a special feature, but in essence, they are all the same as the twenty-three heaps. Jetari explains it as seventeen heaps, etc., and from this, many schools have branched out, so there are many rituals in Tibet. The Kalachakra practitioners add Rahu and the fire of time to the seven heaps, making nine heaps. Adding these two to the twenty-three heaps makes twenty-five heaps, and the arrangement of mountains and continents is the aspect of Kalachakra. Others, no matter how many heaps are placed, since the arrangement of mountains and continents is common to both Sutra and Tantra, it is considered to be in accordance with the third chapter of the Abhidharmakosha. Among these, what is now famous and very prosperous in all schools in the extensive aspect of the mandala is the thirty-seven heaps, said to have been made by the Dharma King Phagpa Rinpoche, which is based on the twenty-three heaps, adding the four differences of wealth of the four continents, the eight goddesses such as Playfulness, and adding the umbrella and banner. Fifth, just the act of the mandala completes all parts of the six perfections, and there are also scriptural proofs that show the incidental benefits and special necessities. As it says in the Mandala Sutra: "Giving with ghee and water is generosity, sweeping is morality, eliminating sentient beings is patience, diligently doing things is diligence, momentarily fixing the mind there is meditation, drawing beautifully is wisdom, making the mandala of the Able One well is the six perfections." It also says: "Here, if one acts with the body, the color of the skin will become like gold, one will be liberated from all diseases, one will be far superior to gods and humans, one will possess splendor like the moon, wealth and gold will be abundant, one will be born in the lineage of kings and the lineage of Buddhas, in the most excellent family." Moreover, as it is said: "Perfect enjoyment and body, perfect retinue and higher realms, always not going under the power of afflictions, and not being inverted in all actions." This is the result of the equal cause of the six perfections.
