The meaning of the four lamps lies in their application. Great wisdom dwells within the central light channel of the heart, its essence being emptiness and inseparable from great compassion and awareness, which is the self-arising lamp of wisdom. The house of rainbow light, clear in its nature, is the lamp of the purity of the dharmadhatu. In its center, the fivefold cluster of light, the five families being aspects of the body, is the lamp of empty bindu, like the plumage of a peacock. When the inner radiance manifests outward, the red and yellow light of the A and Ham syllables of the eye-distance water-wave lamp appears outward, it is called the lamp of empty bindu, which is the luminous empty bindu lamp. The light phenomena appearing in the sky are called the lamp of the purity of the dharmadhatu, which is also the luminous lamp of the purity of the dharmadhatu. Similarly, awareness is called the vajra chain, which is also the luminous vajra chain of awareness. Thus, by focusing on the vajra chain dwelling within the light, and meditating outward without distraction, the wisdom of emptiness and clarity, free from elaboration, arises within, which is called the self-arising lamp of wisdom. This designation is because, based on what already exists from the beginning, it arrives at that time, and is not a self-arising lamp of wisdom that arises newly from nothing. Second, the three abidings are: By acting in this way, external appearances abide, and adverse conditions arise as helpers. Internal illusory body abides, free from the activities of delusion. Secret winds and mind abide, and it is impossible for conceptual thoughts to arise. At this time, there are two ways to measure: by dreams, and by signs appearing on the body and speech. The first is: For the superior practitioner, dreams cease completely. For the intermediate practitioner, one knows in the dream that it is a dream. For the inferior practitioner, bad dreams disappear and are completely transformed into good dreams. The second has four aspects: When the dharmata manifests, the body is like a frog placed in a wooden bowl, unable to stretch out its posture, speech is like a mute, unable to speak, and the mind is like a dakini being knocked down, conceptual thoughts seem scattered, but they have not recovered from the base. When experience increases, the body is like a sick person suffering, without adornment or cleaning, speech is like a madman, meaningless, and the mind is like being poisoned, the scattering of thoughts ceases. When awareness reaches its measure, the body is like an elephant stuck in the mud.

Like a rainbow body, traversing mountains and rocks without obstruction in an instant. Like the melodious sound of a singing clay pot, pleasing and delightful. Like the mind pierced by an arrow, thoughts and ideas cease. When the nature of reality is exhausted, the body is like a corpse in a charnel ground, free from the illusion of affirmation and negation. Speech echoes others like a mountain echo. The mind, like a person cured of illness, thoughts and ideas are purified in the expanse of reality, and awareness abides in self-illumination. Third, the three attainments: By gaining mastery over external appearances, the appearances of conditioned existence are liberated into pure lands. By gaining mastery over the internal aggregates, the illusory body is liberated into clear light. By gaining mastery over the secret expanse of awareness, deluded thoughts naturally cease. Fourth, the four assurances: Upward, there is no expectation of obtaining anything from the Buddhas, nor is there worry about not obtaining it. Downward, there is complete non-arising in samsara, nor is there worry about being born. Through these, establishing awareness is the instruction that makes the meaning of Tögal (Leap Over) heart essence manifest on the path. Third, the four subsequent essentials, the method of practicing the yoga of a continuous stream with the wheel of the nature of reality, has two parts: the main part and the extended meaning. The first has two parts: increasing appearances during the day and pressing wisdom into the essential points at night. The first is that, like the wheel of profound wisdom, the way of protecting the three bases, paths, and fruits with the thirteen great vows must be adopted here. In short, external appearances, internal awareness, in short, do not defile any dharma that includes appearances, existence, samsara, and nirvana with the impurity of clinging mind. Do not bind it with the clinging of experience, but purify it with the mind that thinks that whatever appears is like the play of dreams and illusions. That mind of emptiness that arises like a dream and illusion is also beyond existence and non-existence, right and wrong, bias, good and bad, acceptance and rejection, like the uncontrived sky, abiding without abandoning or retaining. In all the post-attainment states, do not let awareness run wild, but with mindfulness and retention, be certain that all the phenomena that appear in this way are illusions, mirages, reflections in water, emanations, and cities of gandharvas. Not even for a moment is there even a particle of true existence, practice in this way. Likewise, for all dualistic grasping such as attachment and aversion, affirmation and negation, hope and fear, maintain the view of non-duality and primordial liberation in a transparent and naked manner.
