This is based on conditions. First, it is said in the Great Perfection of Ati: "Being learned and free from activities, attaining the meaning of Dharmata, not being deluded about the meaning of desire, are the characteristics of a Tantric Lama." Therefore, in general, being learned in the meaning of all the Tantric scriptures, distinguishing the differences between philosophical systems, in particular, having the experience and warmth of this very path, being skilled in explaining the meaning of the oral instructions, being free from the distractions of attachment, hatred, etc., of this life, perfecting the practice of the two stages by striking the essential points of the Vajra body, thereby attaining the meaning of the wisdom mandala's direct realization of Dharmata. Liberating one's own mind-stream through realization, and being able to ripen the mind-streams of others through compassion. With profound wisdom, cutting through the additions and subtractions of the meaning of reality, not being confused by the answers to questions asked by students. One who possesses these characteristics is called a great Vajra Holder Lama. Conversely, one should not rely on a flawed teacher, as the Self-Arisen Tantra says: "Ignorant and arrogant, foolish and blindly following words, not thinking about the meaning of Tantra, cutting off others' thoughts with arrogance, entering the wrong path, not seeing the face of the empowerment mandala, vows are broken, not answering questions, little learning and great arrogance, an unexamined teacher is the demon of the student." Therefore, one should not rely on a teacher who possesses these flaws from the beginning. Second, the characteristics of a student, as the Self-Arisen Tantra says: "Great faith and diligence, great wisdom and no attachment, respectful and practicing secret mantras, no conceptualization and no distraction of mind, possessing vows and diligent in practice, doing as the teacher says." Therefore, having great joy and striving for the Lama and the oral instructions is the faith of aspiration; especially longing for the attainment of the result is the faith of desire; not doubting is the faith of trust. Not being robbed by temporary circumstances is the ultimate faith, that is, possessing the cause for blessings to enter. Having a firm vow of unwavering courage to accomplish unsurpassed enlightenment. With clear wisdom, examining the profound meaning of reality, it is easy to generate experience and realization. Regarding food, clothing, etc., of worldly

They have little attachment to worldly pleasures and wealth, and great devotion to the Lama and Yidam, thus possessing all the conditions for receiving blessings. They have severed the doubts and hesitations on the path of Secret Mantra, thus being able to enter into profound practice. They do not allow the mind to indulge in ordinary thoughts such as attachment, hatred, and ignorance, thus being free from distraction. They uphold the root and branch vows, and their commitments are firm and unwavering. They have no weariness in meditating on the profound path and do not deviate from the Lama's instructions. Such a student with these qualities should be chosen as the recipient of teachings. Conversely, students with flaws, as stated in 'Self-Arisen': 'They do not show respect or devotion, they behave contrary to Secret Mantra, they have no lineage or patience, their wisdom is small, they despise kindness, and they are senselessly dissolute. A teacher who does not examine the student is an enemy.' If the profound Dharma is taught to such an unsuitable vessel, the oath-bound Dakinis will inflict punishment, accomplishments will not be attained, and slander will arise, therefore they should be avoided. Thirdly, the manner of relying [on the teacher] is that the student with qualities, like a patient relying on a doctor, should serve and be devoted with body, speech, and mind, respectfully and without hypocrisy, for the sake of liberation from the disease of samsara. Like someone desiring a boat relying on a boatman, they should always listen to whatever is said, fearing samsara. Like a merchant relying on a guide, they should make great offerings, desiring liberation, especially mastering the teachings of the lineage gurus through excellent service, purifying the obscurations of the three doors through moderate service of body and speech, and filling the measure of the two accumulations through inferior material offerings, striving to please the teacher in any way possible. As stated in 'Self-Arisen': 'Therefore, to the mantra teacher, offer your own body, precious possessions, and extremely rare things.' And its benefits are also stated in the 'Nectar Source Tantra': 'Even by offering to the Buddhas filling the sky, offerings adorned with various jewels filling three thousand worlds, it is not comparable to applying a single drop of butter to a single hair of the Lama, the merit of which a hundredfold or thousandfold cannot match.' Furthermore, the obscurations of the three doors are purified, everyone is pleased to see them, and merit and wealth increase.
