And, especially, the hateful enemies, the harmful obstructing spirits, all the afflicting spirits who have harbored blood feuds and grudges since beginningless time, all gathered in the assembly ground, with oneself acting as the guide, so that all of them join their palms in respectful gesture, generate faith with respectful minds, and utter the sound of refuge with respectful speech, humming and buzzing. Be pleased to recite, without letting the mind wander elsewhere, contemplating the meaning of the words of refuge, reciting hundreds or thousands of times, and finally, generate bodhicitta. Visualize the refuge field, including the seat and throne, dissolving into light and merging into oneself, so that body, speech, and mind become inseparable from the three kayas, and rest the mind in its natural state. Dedicate the merit. To explain the meaning of refuge a little, just as in the world, people fear powerful figures like kings and seek a refuge or reliance that can protect them, so too, we ourselves, in all stages of this life, future lives, and the bardo, are tormented by countless forms of fear, sinking into the ocean of suffering of samsara without any time for liberation. Parents, relatives, friends, powerful gods and nagas, none can protect us, and we ourselves have no power to reverse this, so we have no choice but to seek a refuge. The only ones who can deliver us from samsara are the Three Jewels. To protect others, one must oneself have attained autonomy. The Three Jewels are the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. In the Mantrayana tradition, three roots must be added to these: the root of blessing, the lama; the root of accomplishment, the yidam; and the root of activity, the dakinis and dharma protectors. These three are also included within the Three Jewels. And all of them are included within the root lama alone, as is said in the context of mantra. Among these, the Buddha is the dharmakaya who knows things as they are and as many as there are, the sambhogakaya endowed with the five certainties, and the nirmanakaya, both emanated and supreme, thus encompassing the three kayas. The Dharma refers to the scriptures, the names, words, and letters, and the verbal teachings, which are the Dharma of transmission; the ground Dharma is the suchness of dharmadhatu, the result Dharma is the truth of cessation, and the path Dharma is the aspects of enlightenment, which are the Dharma of realization, thus encompassing the two Dharmas of transmission and realization. The Sangha refers to the actual non-returning bodhisattvas, and the temporary shravakas, pratyekabuddhas, and aryas. The Buddha is the teacher who shows what to adopt and abandon, so

I pray to the Buddha to be my teacher. Because I must practice the Dharma he taught, I pray to the Dharma to be the path. Like an unfamiliar guide, I must follow the tradition of practicing all the instructions of the noble ones, so I pray to the Sangha to be my companions. When the path reaches its end, there is no longer a need for the Dharma and the Sangha separately. Since one's mind becomes one with the Buddhas, the ultimate refuge is only the Buddha. In terms of philosophical schools, there are many different ways of identifying these and many discussions about whether or not they are refuges, but for those who only practice and plant seeds of virtue, it is better not to bind them with faith. The objects that temporarily generate faith, as stated in the Sutras, are the Buddha images and stupas placed in front of us, which are considered categories of the Buddha. By extension, the scriptures of the sacred Dharma, Sutras and Tantras, and the ordinary Sangha who possess discipline are also visualized as the actual Three Jewels, and one takes refuge and has faith in them. However, if one takes refuge in the Lesser Vehicle or worldly refuges, it will not become a pure refuge, and complete benefits will not arise. Therefore, it is extremely important to have the thought that all sentient beings equal to the extent of space will take refuge from this moment until they attain enlightenment. This will definitely become a Mahayana refuge. Like the meaning of the Sutra on Recollecting the Three Jewels, understanding and knowing the qualities of the Three Jewels, knowing that the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha are superior to external teachers, wrong paths, and non-Buddhists, etc., and because of understanding these reasons, sincerely vowing to take refuge at any time, and not seeking refuge other than the Three Jewels even at the cost of one's life—having these four qualities is said to make it a pure refuge. Taking refuge should not be just repetition and words; one must trust the Three Jewels from the bottom of one's heart. If one trusts, there is absolutely no way that the compassion of the Three Jewels will not protect. Although it may seem that the compassion of the Three Jewels is weak in the face of negative karma that must ripen in this life, if faith is firm, they will definitely protect in future lives and beyond. As soon as one encounters something undesirable, saying that the Three Jewels have no compassion, or relying on divination, sorcery, and medicine, are all signs of a narrow mind. Place
