Suffering is the pain of dying with intense feelings of unease, separated from power, retinue, friends, and even one's own body. Furthermore, despite enduring hardships and overcoming vile slander and evil words, the suffering of not obtaining what is desired, such as food, wealth, and fame, is the suffering of seeking but not finding. The fear of enemies arising, the fear of thieves appearing, the fear of being robbed by force, putting hats on stars, putting shoes on goats, being exhausted and weary from numerous tasks and activities, the anxiety of not succeeding, the worry of being unsafe, and the inability to sustain oneself due to these concerns is the suffering of not being able to protect what one has. Separation from unavoidable people such as parents, siblings, retinue, and disciples, the decline of power and enjoyment, the loss of valuable possessions, misfortune, or the anxiety caused by being slandered by jealous individuals, etc., is the suffering of separation from what is loved. Illness, enemies, lawsuits, the king's punishment, being killed by living beings, gossip and slander, betrayal by unhelpful and harmful companions, etc., are the sufferings of encountering what is undesired. These eight sufferings are mainly present in humans. In short, even the three lower realms and gods and humans experience suffering such as illness and slander. Although life, enjoyment, and peace, etc., may temporarily appear pleasant, the suffering of change due to rapid impermanence. The basis or container of both of these is the five aggregates that are close to being accepted, which are the pervasive suffering of conditioning. Relying on the five aggregates, all the sufferings of the three realms arise. No matter where one is born in the high or low states of samsara, one cannot escape the nature of the three sufferings. No matter how temporary comfort and prosperity appear in dwelling, body, enjoyment, friends, and retinue, they are merely the sustenance of suffering, like feeding a person with a vomiting sickness, or leading a prisoner to the execution ground, or like an executioner providing a joyous feast for the one being executed, attachment is fundamentally reversed, clinging is severed from its root, desire is destroyed from its foundation, and liberation from these faults is considered great, thus one should strive to cultivate the means of the path to enlightenment. Thus, these four common preliminaries generally appear in all stages of guidance, but here, the Incomparable Dagpo (Dagpo Lhaje) supplemented the Three Aspects of the Path of Jowo Je (Atisha), making the teachings of Kagyu and Kadam like water mixed with milk. These four have slightly increased essence.

In general, all genuine meditation cannot be separated from abandoning the eight worldly concerns. The root of all Dharma lies in renouncing this life. Nowadays, all those who practice Dharma are attached to the affairs of this life. Their minds have not turned away from desires, and they have not abandoned their attachment to relatives and friends. Because they see even a little bit of desire for food, clothing, and shelter, their virtuous deeds do not become essential, and Dharma and their own minds become confused. They do not look to see if their practice has reduced their afflictions, but only count the years and months they have practiced. They do not examine their own faults, but instead examine the faults of others. They become conceited with even a little bit of merit. They lose their minds in the hustle and bustle for fame and gain. They engage in many meaningless conversations. They want to accomplish both Dharma and worldly affairs simultaneously, but in the end, they accomplish nothing. This is because they have not remembered impermanence from the beginning and lack sincerity. Therefore, Gyalwa Jigten Sumgön (འབྲི་ཁུང་པ, 1143-1217) said, "The preliminaries are more profound than the actual Dharma." If these four preliminaries arise even a little bit in one's mind, it is much better than those who nowadays claim to be proficient in the recitation and practice of the four tantras. If one's mind remains in an ordinary state, then the Dharma one practices is only deceiving oneself and others, wasting one's life. In short, if even a little bit of renunciation does not arise, all meditation is just accumulating some texts and knowledge, and nothing more. Therefore, one should always contemplate the suffering of samsara and the uncertainty of death, and be sure to tame one's mind. The sutras say that when entering the sacred Dharma, there will be demonic obstacles that cause faith to diminish. Therefore, the signs that one is being disturbed by demons are: finding fault with the lama and the virtuous friend, finding fault with the shortcomings of ordinary practitioners, associating with ordinary people, relaxing the diligence of practice, indulging in desires, and lacking respect for the Three Jewels. Therefore, one should contemplate the qualities of the lama and the Three Jewels, and generate pure perception towards practitioners. Thinking that others are bad is a sign of one's own impurity, and one should remember the example of a dirty face appearing in a mirror. Do not associate with ordinary people, do not listen to their words, and remember the faults of desires. In general, if there is no faith, no white qualities will arise, so faith must precede all Dharma. There are many types of faith, but the most important is to have unwavering faith, to be respectful from the depths of one's heart, and to be wholeheartedly devoted to everything.
