When the body and mind are disturbed, one doesn't want to look at the mind, and yet one abides calmly without distraction, the mind is very happy, and sometimes when abiding like that, one feels sleepy, or sometimes one has difficulty breathing, and dreams occur naturally many times. Also, while abiding, a thought arises, and as soon as it arises, one abides together with it, and it seems that one can pull the thought back and put it down, and various kinds of experiences arise. This is said to be a sign of knowing how to meditate, so if one cultivates without changing it, one will generate any one of the superior, middling, or inferior abidings mentioned in the scriptures. If one studies calm abiding with an object of focus, although there are many ways to study, it is especially beneficial to visualize Shakyamuni Buddha in front of oneself and focus one's mind on him, and to count the exhaling and inhaling of breath. It is said that if one generates ultimate calm abiding, all the mundane superknowledges and miraculous powers will arise, but there are also differences in the quality of one's lineage and faculties. Nowadays, there are not many people who can meditate like that. Even if one can, it is a time when it is difficult to accomplish common siddhis. Even if one can accomplish them, one should only do so incidentally, and not intentionally seek them. If superknowledges and so on arise accidentally, one should abandon them without concern, but if one intentionally seeks them, it will be a cause for the arising of demonic obstacles. Similarly, fame and power, and material fortune, etc., are also said to arise mostly from this. If one's virtuous practice diminishes because of this, then that is said to be the blessing of a demon. At this time, one abides by grasping the mind's calm abiding and the movement of distracting thoughts as two different things. One only observes by thinking about the movement, but one does not know the true nature of oneself, so one says that one knows abiding and movement. After that, one should not regard thoughts and awareness as separate and different, but like waves and water, which have the same taste, one should abide in the state of self-awareness and self-illumination. If one still does not understand, then one should abide. One should not recall, chase after, or examine anything, but simply abide in the nature of oneself who is thinking "abiding, moving," and by abiding in this way, one's mind will be satisfied like an undisturbed wheel-turning monarch, clarity and emptiness will be manifest, and whatever thoughts arise will be like snow falling on a stone, arising and immediately disappearing. One thinks, "Why don't these people meditate like this?" and one develops confidence in oneself and weariness of others. Like a mountain.

Even when sitting alone, one wonders if one has grasped the essential point. It seems as though there is no concern for the eight worldly dharmas. Sometimes, many confused and chaotic thoughts arise, making it impossible to find something to look at or hold onto. At other times, there seems to be an unparalleled dullness, which appears to be a particular type of experience. Then, repeatedly and thoroughly investigating the mind's origin, its destination, its abiding place in between, its shape, color, oneness, and multiplicity, one finds that it has no origin. There is no such thing as cessation here. There is no place where it abides now. Shape and color cannot be definitively grasped. Seeing the essence of mind, which is free from all elaboration, without a location, and self-luminous, nakedly and clearly, is called vipashyana. However, this is merely an experience of meditation, not the actual seeing of the realized self-essence. At this time, the understanding arises that there is no duality between the object of observation and the observer, and it is said that resting without artifice is what is meant here. Sometimes, one is completely unaware of distraction, but occasionally, when clarity arises, everything becomes clear and bright. Sometimes, it feels as though there is no object of meditation, and one is simply sitting in a normal state, which makes one wonder if the meditation has become weaker than before. Even when thoughts arise, it seems that one does not need to struggle as before, but can simply let them be. In this way, various different phenomena arise, sometimes high, sometimes low, sometimes long, sometimes short, and for a while, there is no progress at all, which sometimes leads to discouragement. At other times, one thinks that there seems to be no higher view or meditation than this. One desires to boast to others about one's profound realization. In dreams, one sometimes dreams of past siddhas and yidam deities, and sometimes even of inauspicious and malevolent beings, which causes a mixture of hope and fear. Sometimes, distraction and practice are mixed together, and one thinks that one seems to be unaffected by distraction. However, if one remains in a state of distraction for a long time, the five poisons and the eight worldly dharmas will arise even more strongly than before, to the point where one is temporarily unable to follow and subdue them with mindfulness. Even if one is able to subdue them, it is difficult to gain control. Therefore, unless one has gained very firm stability, it is essential to abandon distraction and focus on meditation. Then, through the blessing of devotion, or as if a past karmic connection has been awakened, awareness arises nakedly. There is no need to deliberately grasp at thoughts, and self-essence, the object of observation, and the observer become one. The appearances of the six senses
