It seems that even those who are conceited are unknowingly being stained in their minds, so it is important to suppress them in every way. Abandon flattery, adulation, hypocrisy, measuring by gain, and seeking gain through acquisition, which are the five wrong livelihoods in every way. It would be good if we could have someone with virtues and high realization, but that is difficult. It would be wonderful if we could have someone who is not ashamed of themselves, does not deceive others, and whose words and actions are consistent. Although many mistakes are mentioned, if someone proficient emerges from the fabrications of reality, then whether it is a mistake or not will naturally become clear, so there is no need to say more. Now, isn't even the whetstone of transformation being offered as a good offering without discernment? For those who only slightly recognize the nature of conceptual thought and boast that they have awareness in their minds, there seems to be no need to worry about the mistakes mentioned in the scriptures. If there is no attachment to all practices, mistakes will not occur. However, unless there is a very strong attachment to superiority, one will inevitably make slight mistakes, because the root lies in attachment and clinging. The biggest mistakes are: being disrespectful when associating with the lama; having little pure perception of Dharma friends; disparaging other traditions; being arrogant; being hypocritical in keeping vows; letting the five poisons run wild; not valuing the law of cause and effect; being boastful and full of empty words; proclaiming one's experiences in the marketplace; and using the lies of worldly lamas as the core of one's practice. Although these phenomena exist, they are each blessed by demons. It seems that the disciples have all become inferior beings of the degenerate age, because relying on (the lama), they do not understand the key points of the Dharma and blindly follow, so even though Shakyamuni Buddha has blocked the path of mistakes, it is like water off a duck's back. In short, the result of practicing Dharma should be taming one's own mind, but instead, they fight for the sake of Dharma, quarrel under the pretext of propagating the Dharma, and take usury, which puts aside the benefit of others, and other things that are not allowed in the Dharma, as the main practice of practitioners. Matchless Dagpo said: The beginner is not the time to fight with afflictions, but the time to flee. It seems that we have not yet reached the point where we can transform afflictions into the path, so we must be wary of alcohol, women, anger, jealousy, reckless sleep, and so on. The so-called ability to transform afflictions into the path refers to the self-nature of those like Tilopa and Naropa, who have perfected the power of wisdom within.

Unless one has the ability to display miraculous feats outwardly, it is not referring to those who, without having gained freedom of mind, use their own afflictions as chaotic behavior. For those who have no experiential realization themselves, even if they help sentient beings, it will not be of any help; instead, it will harm themselves. Like protecting the seedling of a great medicine rather than cutting it short, focusing solely on one's own practice is most important. For those who have not yet gained stable warmth, even if they help others, it will harm themselves. It is said that once one attains the ground, the benefit of oneself and others will effortlessly arise. Even if harm such as illness, misfortune, evil spirits, and obstacles occur, if someone thinks, "I am sick," "I am harmed by evil spirits," etc., by looking at their own nature, even when they are in a state of decline, although there is no immediate harm, by repeatedly persevering, it will gradually vanish without a trace. Furthermore, if symptoms of residual poison arise, by looking at the nature, the clinging to illness and the delusion of spirits, etc., will gradually diminish. The same applies to suffering, etc. If the situation is slightly better, when the arising of illness, etc., and meditation cease, the nature will become empty, clear, and vivid. If one cannot maintain mindfulness, there is no difference from ordinary people. Even if one understands that appearances are merely one's own mind, if one has not gained realization from the ground up, when object and mind meet, it will not be liberated into a rootless and baseless state. Therefore, for the time being, one must learn not to cling to the arising of the six consciousnesses. Among these, it is best to do so in the first moment, and secondly in the second moment, without continuing to generate subsequent clinging, but rather to continuously maintain the mindfulness of recognition. Tilopa said, "Appearances do not bind, clinging binds. Naropa, cut off clinging!" In short, conceptual thought is the natural expression of the mind, like water and waves; it is impossible to be without conceptual thought. For conceptual thought, the appearance of various external objects is like a rainbow appearing on clear glass. Even if realization is high, it is impossible not to have appearances. However, the key lies in whether or not one clings to and acknowledges conceptual thought and appearances. As long as one is not distracted and continuously recognizes one's own nature, it is said that no matter how strong conceptual thought and external appearances are, they are wisdom. If one does not recognize one's own nature, then non-conceptual thought is merely a state of neutrality. What appears in conceptual thought is also the self-radiance of emptiness; one must know that appearance and emptiness are inseparable. Therefore, there is no need to stop conceptual thought, but rather to stop clinging to the essence of emptiness.
