Places and Activities: Explaining and spreading the essential points of the profound Completion Stage among ordinary people, claiming them to be unique instructions that others do not possess, and hawking the profound view and practice of Secret Mantra in the marketplace. Engaging in chaotic behavior, while claiming to have lofty views. Being extremely attached to the possessions and wealth of the Three Jewels. Being deceitful and hypocritical, teaching empowerments and instructions without lineage. Enjoying the pleasure of alcohol and union. Being unable to correctly show the path as it is, and instead teaching self-fabricated words that are contrary to the Dharma, such a teacher is blessed by demons and should be abandoned in every way. As for students, those who lack faith, do not keep their vows, are fond of making new friends and flattering, and are fickle-minded, etc., should not be closely associated with from the beginning, unless they can be gradually tamed. The qualities of a lama are extensively explained in all the sutras and tantras, but one who does not lose faith and vows, has completed recitations and practice and knows how to practice, is not particularly attached to the eight worldly concerns, and has practiced the Dharma that he will teach to others to some extent, such a lama is necessary. The student should also be steadfast in faith and able to keep vows, and not associate with evil friends. The examination of the qualities of teacher and student should be done before receiving empowerment and Dharma. If one has already received empowerment and Dharma, even if one has all four defeats, one should only regard them as objects of respect, and should not have wrong views, curses, examinations, etc. Even upon hearing just one verse, If you do not regard the lama with reverence, You will be born as a dog a hundred times, And you will be born as a leper. So it is said. A lama who has abandoned all faults and perfected all qualities is difficult to find due to the times. Even if one or two can be found occasionally, if one's own perception is impure, one will see faults in the qualities, just as Devadatta saw faults in the Blessed One, and so on. Most people nowadays are those who share the karma of accumulating negative actions, so they see faults as qualities, and those with qualities as faults. They see as holy beings those who do not have a single quality that can distinguish truth from falsehood and that accords with the Dharma, and so on, so it is difficult to know the examination as it is. In particular, for the guide of Mahamudra, like drawing patterns on a rough object, like replacing a real Buddha with a clay statue, the lama's realization

If there is no qualified master, it is impossible to generate ultimate realization in the disciple's mindstream. Therefore, the peerless Dagpo (དྭགས་པོ, Gampopa), Jey Dusum Khyenpa (རྗེ་དུས་མཁྱེན, 1st Karmapa Dusum Khyenpa), Zhang Tsalpa, Götsangpa, and so on, once you have received the oral transmission from these lineages, whichever one you have the most faith in, take them as your root guru, and if you pray to them, they have promised to bestow blessings. In particular, the peerless Dagpo Gyalwa (དྭགས་པོ་རྒྱལ་བ, Gampopa) was prophesied to spread the Great Seal (Mahamudra), so it is crucial for anyone interested in Mahamudra to place their trust in Jetsun Gampopa, and to meditate on their root guru as inseparable from him. If you receive a lineage of blessings from a guru like a father and son, and take them as your root guru, that alone is sufficient, and no further investigation is necessary. There is no need to rely on other Kagyu lineages either, because all the great beings of the past, through oral transmission, have transferred the wisdom of realization from one to another, and are able to bless other minds. Even if you hear the Dharma from a well-known guru like a father and son, you can still take another guru with experience and realization as your root guru, and you will still receive blessings. Whether that guru is actually an ordinary person or an emanation of a Buddha or Bodhisattva, if you can regard them as a Buddha and pray to them, then all the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Yidam deities will follow the body, speech, and mind of that Vajra Master and work for the benefit of beings. As it says in the "Oral Instructions of Manjushri": "In the future, the Vajra Holder, whoever despises him, any sentient being, he also despises, I will always abandon all of them. I dwell in his body, practice and receive offerings from others, he is pleased, he purifies, the defilements of his karma." Therefore, if you please your guru, you please all the Buddhas. Accumulating negative karma towards him is no different from accumulating negative karma towards all the Buddhas. If you make offerings to him, you will gain the merit of making offerings to all the Buddhas and purify your obscurations. Countless scriptures and treatises say that supreme accomplishments depend solely on the guru, and that generating devotion and making offerings to him has immeasurable benefits. As it says in the Tantra: "More than meditating on hundreds of thousands of deities, if one's mind does not wander from the guru's body, it is better than hundreds of thousands of deities."
