Should be practiced. It is said that hearing the Dharma can close the gates of evil destinies and plant the seeds of Nirvana. From then on, one will only be born as a wise person who understands the Dharma, and so on, as stated in many sutras. Furthermore, the *Twin Sutra* says: "Whoever gives even a hair's worth of alms to my teachings will have great enjoyment and abundant wealth for eighty thousand kalpas." And so on, the benefits of generosity are vast, but even more supreme is upholding moral discipline. The *Damamūka Nidāna Sutra* says: "Whoever goes forth, their merit is extremely great. Whether it is my son, daughter, or servant, whoever is allowed to go forth, or if one goes forth oneself, their merit is immeasurable. The merit of generosity has an end, but the merit of going forth in the teachings of the Buddha is inconceivable. Until Nirvana, merit will never be exhausted." It is said. The benefits of upholding moral discipline after going forth are beyond words. Moreover, in the past, when the teachings had not declined, the complete precepts were upheld for many years, and even liberation from the mind was attained. But now, when the teachings are declining, like today, even upholding just one precept, or slightly subduing the mind's afflictions, has great benefit. As the *Samadhiraja Sutra* says: "For as many kalpas as there are grains of sand in the Ganges, with a joyful mind, offering food and drink, umbrellas, banners, and garlands of lamps to countless Buddhas, if someone, when the sacred Dharma is decaying and the Sugata's teachings are disappearing, practices one precept day and night, their merit is far superior to the former." As it says, although the benefits are great, most monastics nowadays do not diligently keep their vows, and therefore fall into evil destinies, while laypeople are reborn as gods with faithful minds, as extensively explained in the *Karunapundarika Sutra*. Ananda, those householders who die, after they die, will mostly be reborn in the heaven of Tushita. Those who have gone forth, when they die, will mostly fall. Why is that? Because they do not abide in frugality, nor do they abide in vows. This passage of scripture is shameful, so one should generate aspiration and diligence.

And, being mindful, that is, learning about these three is very important even for an hour. Also, in that sutra it says: In the future time, when the sacred Dharma is about to decline, those who have renounced in my teachings, holding a child's arm, wander in taverns for the sake of a cup of wine. Those who study my Dharma, all of them will completely be liberated from suffering in this Fortunate Aeon. Thus, the power of the Buddha's own aspiration is inconceivable, and the extent of the connection is the meaningful way. Having entered the teachings, even keeping the precepts for just one day is very important. Similarly, the root of virtue that is slightly connected to an inconceivable realm is also inconceivable. In the chapter on images, it says: Even if one has committed the five heinous crimes, if one gains faith in the Thus-Gone One and makes an image, then the suffering that beings experience in hell as a result of that action will be lessened, and they will surely be liberated through any of the three vehicles. And, if the intention is pure, then the material is also the best of jewels. In that sutra it says that even the worst clay, or what is drawn on the wall with a fingernail (Buddha image), there is no difference. In the Lotus Sutra of the Sacred Dharma, this is explained in detail: Children like to play, and in those games, whoever builds a stupa for the Buddha, or piles up a heap of sand, they will also attain enlightenment. Also, whether it is clay, iron, or earth, having made the image of the Sugatas, and when some people are learning there, for the sake of playing or keeping secrets, drawing images on the wall or wood with fingernails, all of these will attain enlightenment, all of these will become compassionate, all of these will liberate countless beings. And so on. In both the Wondrous Sutra and the Mansion Sutra, it says: Having transformed the three thousand great thousand worlds into the nature of the seven precious jewels, and offering it to the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas of the four directions, it is better to build a stupa of the Buddha, even if it is made of clay the size of a mustard seed, and insert a life-tree the size of a needle, or put a relic the size of a mustard seed in the image, the merit obtained is greater. The relic can be a paper roll of the Five Great Dharanis, and so on. The benefits of building scripture images are also summarized in more detail than in general scriptures and aspects of wisdom.
