When special time changes such as the three, etc., that will occur below descend, or if the mind of Dharma arises and favorable conditions are complete, it can be at that very moment. Because human life is uncertain and procrastination is the greatest obstacle to the Dharma. That is, from the time when dawn appears before eating in the morning, taking vows, until the time when dawn appears the next day is the time limit for fasting, so one day and one night is observed during that time. It is also the same when connecting multiple times during the month of miracles, etc., and the method of taking it is explained in detail elsewhere. What is to be protected is to abide in the eight branches, that is, deliberately taking life, taking anything not given, engaging in impure conduct with women, etc., lying with a human Dharma guru as the main thing, etc., abandoning the four roots is a branch of morality. Abandoning intoxicating alcohol is a branch of mindfulness. After noon, drinking tea, etc., except for using very diluted water, all kinds of non-time food and food, and dancing, singing, playing music, etc. for the sake of playing, which are not related to rituals, the three things of dance, etc., adorning with ornaments in a seductive manner, applying colors such as rouge, etc., applying incense for the fragrance of body and clothes, etc., the three things of garlands, etc., except for the Dharma speaker, beds decorated with real jewels or gold foil, etc., and silk cushions, tiger skins, etc., valuable and brightly colored cushions, that is, large beds, and heights more than one cubit. Thus, abandoning non-time food, dance, etc., garlands, etc., and the three high and large beds are branches of asceticism, which together are eight branches. Jowo Je added to this the use of only three white meals at noon, and two urinations for the sake of mindfulness. Secondly, killing will lead to the three lower realms, especially the reviving hell. If reborn as a human, one will also be short-lived, ugly, dull-witted, constantly fearful and angry, have many diseases, be very painful, and be separated from all happiness. It is said that for every life taken, one must repay nine hundred and ninety-nine to three hundred lives, depending on the good or bad. Taking what is not given will lead to the screaming hell. Even if reborn as a human, one will not accumulate even a little enjoyment. New

Difficult to find. Separated from possessions and impoverished. Hated and harmed by others. Engaging in impure conduct leads to rebirth in the Great Crying Hell. Even if reborn as a human, one will be reborn for five hundred lifetimes as a leper woman, a woman with incomplete faculties and ugliness, and only as a hermaphrodite. There are many harms and enemies. Lying leads to rebirth in the Black Line Hell. Even if reborn as a human, one will be mute. Compassion does not arise. Great jealousy. Unpleasant smell. In all lifetimes, one does not understand the meaning of the Dharma. Drinking alcohol leads to rebirth in the Hot Hell of drinking molten iron. Even if reborn as a human, one will be sleepy, foolish, and forgetful. Low intelligence. Full of fear, dread, and doubt. Many gossips. No shame or embarrassment. Great jealousy and stinginess. Virtuous qualities decline. One will take five hundred rebirths as a yaksha, a dog, and a madman. The five together experience the suffering of the three lower realms countless times, etc. These are called natural transgressions, and whoever commits them, whether or not they have taken vows, will experience these consequences. If one takes vows and then engages in these non-virtuous actions, the fault will be increased a hundred thousand times, and one will incur a transgression of violating the precepts. There are also many very great faults in eating food in the afternoon, etc., but it is not possible to enumerate them all. Thirdly, in general, by abandoning impure things such as the four root downfalls and the five kinds of alcohol, one will be reborn as a distinguished god or human. Abstaining from killing will lead to long life and freedom from illness, etc. The ways to be freed from the above faults and obtain many benefits are explained in detail in the Sutra on the Benefits of the Five Precepts. In particular, regarding the benefits associated with the Upavasa vows, the Sutra of Abiding states: Asked: "Venerable Lord, if here two men abide, one gives alms for as long as he lives, and one abides in the eight-branched Upavasa vows, which of the two will have greater merit?" The Blessed One replied: "Abiding in this, guarding the eight branches of the Noble Path, and giving alms are not the same. For example, suppose in Jambudvipa, the Arhats whose minds are completely liberated are filled, and someone fills the sixty great countries such as Anga and Kashi for as long as they live with all kinds of precious substances such as vajra, mani jewels, and vaidurya, and generates the power of diligence..."
