Furthermore, regarding the explanation of the connection with the Mahayana precepts prescribed in the Uposatha previously observed, it concerns the methods of guarding, the faults, and the benefits. Firstly, regarding the guardians, both householders and renunciates can be guardians. As for the method of guarding, it is not sufficient to be merely a Bhikshu who holds the Pratimoksha vows; one must receive the vows from someone whose lineage of vows has not been interrupted, and who initially holds the Bodhicitta with the intention of benefiting all sentient beings, as indicated by the seven sections of the scripture, starting with "For the benefit of all sentient beings," and then taking the vows by reciting them three times. Afterwards, whenever one wishes to take them again, one can take them oneself in the presence of a qualified support, as explained in the scriptures. This precept is not merely a Pratimoksha vow, but a Mahayana Pratimoksha, a precept that restrains misconduct. Although the eight branches are vows for a day and night, etc., which can be relinquished after completion, the seed of Bodhicitta is not relinquished until enlightenment is attained. Therefore, from that point onwards, one should never be separated from the sole intention of benefiting others in all circumstances. As stated in the Ratnakuta Sutra, this precept is taken by the prince, with great compassion, for as long as life lasts. Therefore, it seems to be implied that it is permissible to take it for that long, or for any appropriate number of years or months. The time is the same as before. The categories of what is to be guarded are the same as above, but here, due to the distinctive nature of the Mahayana precepts, the three unwholesome mental actions are primarily abandoned, and the seven actions of body and speech to be abandoned are abandoned as a consequence. For example, with regard to killing, needless to say, killing a human being or a fetus, or even lice and fleas, is out of the question. Even stepping on them unknowingly is due to the influence of ignorance, and if it is not confessed and purified, it will result in the downfall of abandoning sentient beings. Therefore, every aspect of the eight branches must be guarded from the subtlest of details. Regarding food, sugar, molasses, honey, butter, milk, yogurt, water, syrup, and tea, mixed with pure water, can be consumed from dawn until dusk. Apart from these, grains such as wheat, barley, and rice, which are said to be untimely foods, can only be consumed from dawn until noon. After noon, not even a little can be eaten. In particular, for the Mahayana Uposatha, not even the smell of meat and blood should be mixed in. As stated in the Elephant Strength Sutra, the Great Cloud Sutra, the Nirvana Sutra, the Angulimaliya Sutra, and the Lankavatara Sutra, "I completely condemn meat." As these sutras state, the fault of eating meat is immeasurable.

It is said that there is none. The "Compendium of Mañjuśrī's View" also states: "Killing for the sake of obtaining goods, and paying for the sake of eating, both of these are also killing, suffering in cries and so on. When meat is bought with goods, if there is no sin for householders, then how can making statues and so on become merit? Those who kill and crave wealth will suffer for hundreds of millions of kalpas. Those who eat and crave meat will suffer for billions of kalpas. Whoever eats meat, first goes to the realm of pretas, and later goes to the realm of crying." Thus, it is briefly explained. Smelling the scent of meat, the invisible subtle beings between heaven and earth faint from fear, and the spirits also panic. Because it is impossible for beings not to have been mothers in many lifetimes, eating the flesh of one's mother is very shameful. It also leads to not believing in the Dharma and not respecting the Dharma, and ultimately falling into many bad rebirths such as maggots, tongue-licking, etc., and finally falling into the lower realms. In short, meat-eaters are not followers of the Victorious One, and the Victorious One is not their teacher. Garlic, onions, etc., also seem to have similar faults, so caution is very important, which is also mentioned in passing. Secondly, the faults of not guarding are known from what was said above. In particular, if bodhicitta is not generated, there is no way to attain Buddhahood, which is mentioned in all the scriptures. The Incomparable Dagpo said: "If the supreme bodhicitta is not generated, even if one has perfect conduct, one will not enter the Great Vehicle, and if one does not enter the Great Vehicle, one will not attain perfect Buddhahood." Thus he said. Thirdly, the benefits are also the same as the common benefits mentioned above. Because bodhicitta is generated, sins are quickly purified, accumulations are completely perfected, both one's own and others' benefit are accomplished, and one will attain Buddhahood without delay, etc., there are countless benefits. As it is said in the "Sutra Requested by Brave Giving": "The merit of bodhicitta, if it had a form, would fill the entire space of the sky, and it would be even greater than that." As it is said in the "Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life": "All other virtues are like banana trees, they are exhausted after bearing fruit. The tree of bodhicitta always bears fruit and never runs out."
