Oral instructions are particularly important. If a qualified Mahayana common mind and conduct have not arisen in one's being, one should never enter the gate of mantra. Even if one has entered, the mantra will be perverted, like the mantras of Rudra, Rakshasas, and great flesh-eating demons. Therefore, one must first be sustained by a genuine bodhichitta that wishes to establish all sentient beings pervading the sky in the state of union. In the middle, one should not mix whatever meditation and meaning contemplation one does. Finally, if possible, one should dedicate all roots of virtue with a dedication that completely purifies the three spheres. If not, one should dedicate to following the deeds of the victorious ones. Both the two stages are indispensable and of great importance. Nowadays, some people only consider the number of recitations as practicing secret mantra and do not bother to meditate on the meaning. Some people think they have meditated a little and are content with a slightly clear generation stage in their minds, and they consider the mere experience of leaving the clear awareness of union uncorrected as the completion stage, thus despising the stages with elaboration. Some who do not understand at all place their hopes on arrangements and music alone. These are all signs of the decline of the teachings of the three yogas, as prophesied by the primordial protector, and are very prevalent. In general, the victorious Vajradhara, being skilled in teaching and knowing all the dispositions of those to be tamed, liberates them from all doors of activity that tame them, each in their own way, which is also wonderful. However, if one thinks that is all there is to mantra, it is like mistaking copper for gold. Therefore, if one wishes to practice secret mantra, one must diligently practice the generation stage with elaboration and the completion stage without elaboration. Except for the time of great accomplishment, such as the proper performance of rituals and mantra recitation, one should not make those rituals that are merely within one's power the main focus. For example, the great accomplished ones of India focused their minds on each instruction of the generation and completion stages for many years, thus generating the qualities described in the tantras and attaining accomplishment. In our Tibetan land, even if we have completed the approach and accomplishment of the four classes of tantra, and recited hundreds of millions of mantras, there is no certainty that we will achieve a qualified realization. This is a sign of not understanding the meaning of secret mantra. Both India and Tibet.

There is no difference in the blessing of mantra, whether near or far. Therefore, it is important to emphasize the generation stage as taught by our own tradition. That is, the object to be purified is the Buddha himself, the essence of the Sugata, complete with all qualities. The object to be purified is the delusion of grasping and clinging, obscured by sudden, cloud-like obscurations. The means of purification is the skillful means of mantra, which is similar in basis, result, and form. The result of purification is the meaning of the naturally pure nature abiding in the ground, which manifests. The generation stage with four special qualities, which gradually perfects the degree of clarity, purity, and stability, is the definitive and complete generation stage, which is only a possibility at present. To practice the complete ritual of preliminary, main, and concluding practices in one sitting, and only briefly engage in the corresponding samadhi and faith in each case, without being able to cultivate clear appearance in stages, is a generation stage that follows faith, which is common nowadays. In such cases, before clear appearance arises, the six places of training, which are unique to this Dharma, are emphasized in the generation stage. If clarity arises in the mind or fatigue occurs, one engages in recitation with the four branches of approach and accomplishment. In the breaks between sessions, one trains in the six places of vows, which is the third. To briefly explain these, the generation stage, as the path, the first of the six places of training is to hold the mind on the deity, which also has three aspects. In order to cut off ordinary illusions, the form must be clear, that is, those with superior intellect can simultaneously perceive it like a reflection in water and a rainbow, without clinging to it. Those with inferior intellect should first focus on the whole form vaguely, and then gradually focus on clarifying the head, hands, feet, etc., one by one. That is, one should first meditate on it as a permanent clay statue, and gradually train in appearance without inherent existence, which is one. In order to counteract the fault of clinging to permanence, one should have pure mindfulness, and if possible, one should bring each aspect to mind as it appears in the Great Manifest Realization and other texts. If one cannot do everything, one should remember it briefly, or in accordance with pure mindfulness: all Buddhas are the single Dharmakaya. The Dharmakaya has no face, hands, or other marks, but inconceivable qualities manifest in the form of faces, hands, and ornaments, thus spontaneously accomplishing activities.
