Now, I will explain. First, it is shown that attachment to sentient beings within will lead to bad migrations. Second, it is shown that attachment to external objects will lead to bad migrations. The advice to abandon taking what is not given, along with its factors, is as follows: O fortunate one, listen! Taking what is not given is condemned by the Blessed One in many ways, and abandoning taking what is not given is praised, honored, extolled, and spoken of favorably. O fortunate one, from this day forward, do not take the wealth of others with a stealing mind, not even a sesame husk or a bit of tsampa that is not given. What need is there to mention taking five mashakas or more than five mashakas that are not given? O fortunate one, the Blessed One, the Thus-Gone One, the Foe Destroyer, the Perfectly and Completely Awakened One, the Knower and Seer, also said: If a monk dwells in a village or in a monastery, and he takes something that belongs to the category of stealing, something that is not given, then the king or a minister seizes him and says to him, 'Hey, you are a thief, a child, a fool, a robber!' And then they kill him, or imprison him, or exile him. If a monk takes what is not given in this way, then that monk has fallen and cannot remain. The Blessed One has spoken this. If a monk does such a thing, then immediately he is no longer a monk, no longer a practitioner, no longer a son, and he will lose his status as a monk. His practice will be destroyed, decayed, collapsed, fallen, and defeated, and his practice will be irretrievable. It is like, for example, if the head of a palm tree is cut off, it cannot become green again, nor can it grow, flourish, or expand. From now on, even if it is easy to abandon what is not to be used, what is not to be done, and what is not to be practiced, strive to protect your mind very carefully with mindfulness and vigilance. How could you practice such a thing? It should be said that he will not practice such a thing. Second, it is shown the downfall that leads to taking what is not given, along with its factors. Third, it is shown that if one kills out of anger, it will lead to bad migrations. The advice to abandon killing, along with its factors, is as follows: O fortunate one, listen! Killing is condemned by the Blessed One in many ways.

is blamed. Abstaining from killing is praised, honored, lauded, and commended. From now on, O long-lived one, you must not knowingly kill any living being, even the smallest creature. What need is there to mention a human being or one who has taken human form? O long-lived one, the Blessed One, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened One, the all-knowing and all-seeing one, has said: If a bhikshu knowingly kills a human being or one who has taken human form, either by personally wielding a weapon, or by giving a weapon to another, or by seeking someone to wield a weapon, or by inciting them to die, or by praising death, saying to them, 'Alas, man, what is the use of this sinful, impure, evil life? Alas, man, it is better for you to die than to live!' And if, through the desires and thoughts of his mind, he incites them to die or praises death in various ways, and that person then dies, that bhikshu has fallen and must not remain. This is what the Blessed One has taught. As soon as a bhikshu commits such an act, he is no longer fit to be a bhikshu, no longer fit to be a renunciate, no longer fit to be a son of the Buddha, and he falls away from the state of being a bhikshu. His practice of renunciation is destroyed, lost, ruined, fallen, and defeated, and his practice of renunciation can never be recovered. Just as if the head of a palm tree is cut off, it can never turn green again, nor can it grow, flourish, or expand. From now on, strive to guard your mind with mindfulness and vigilance, abstaining from what is not to be done, what is not to be acted upon, and what is not to be practiced. How can you not commit such an offense? It should be said that he will not commit this offense. Third, having spoken of the killing that leads to downfall, along with its components. Fourth, if, stirred by the defilement of ignorance, one claims to possess superhuman abilities and qualities, such as clairvoyance or divine vision, which one does not actually have, then, to admonish against abandoning the false speech that leads to downfall and its components, (the Buddha said): O long-lived one, listen. False speech is condemned by the Blessed One in various ways, and abstaining from false speech is praised, honored, and lauded.
