Whether it's a circumambulation path, a pavilion, a mansion, a cool room above a gatehouse, a curtained room on the roof, a curtained room, a turf-covered room, an underground cave, a rock cave, a mountain cave, a grass hut, a leaf hut, whether it's been made into a dwelling or not, whether it's been made into a bird shelter or not, or any other suitable dwelling, whatever is obtained from the Sangha or an individual, you should take it according to your capacity. Do you vow to such a dwelling? He should say, 'I vow.' Fourth, there are two instructions regarding medicine: First, abandoning the extreme of desire for medicine: Listen, you who are called by this name! Among medicines, discarded excrement is easy to obtain and suitable. If one dwells on it, it becomes the property of a monk who has gone forth and been fully ordained in the Dharma-Vinaya well taught by the monk. Listen, you who are called by this name! Are you willing to live on discarded excrement medicine for as long as you live? He should say, 'I am willing.' Second, abandoning the extreme of attachment to medicine: If one obtains additionally melted butter, sesame oil, honey, or molasses drip, or what is suitable for the time, or what is suitable for the portion, or seven-day medicine, or what can be kept for life, or root medicine, or stem medicine, or leaf medicine, or flower medicine, or fruit medicine. Furthermore, whatever suitable medicine is obtained from the Sangha or an individual, you should take it according to your capacity. Do you vow to such (medicine)? He should say, 'I vow.' Thus, the instruction on the object of reliance is finished. Second, there are three instructions on guarding pure morality: instruction on the characteristic, instruction on the antidote, and instruction on the example. The first part has two: instruction on the characteristic of what is to be abandoned itself, and instruction on the characteristic of the antidote in general. The first part mainly discusses the need to abandon the four root downfalls, because they cause one to fall into the lower realms. First, abandoning attachment to sentient beings within: Listen, you who are called by this name! These four are said by the Bhagavan, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened One, who knows and sees, to be the Dharma that causes a monk who has gone forth and been fully ordained to fall. If a monk does

Immediately, one becomes an unsuitable monk, an unsuitable practitioner, an unsuitable son, and will fall away from the reality of a monk. His monastic conduct will be destroyed, decayed, ruined, fallen, and defeated, and his practice of monasticism will be impossible to restore. For example, if the head of a palm tree is cut off, it cannot turn green again, nor can it grow, flourish, or become wide. What are the four? Namely, desire, attachment to desire, infatuation with desire, and excessive attachment to desire, which the Blessed One condemns in many ways. Abandoning desire is praised, and casting away, removing, extinguishing, being free from attachment, ceasing, pacifying, and extinguishing are praised, revered, lauded, and extolled. Venerable one, from now on, do not even gaze with a lustful mind at the realm of women, let alone engage in impure conduct of two-by-two union, practicing sexual acts. Venerable one, the Blessed One, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened One, the Knower, the Seer, has said: If any monk who observes the same precepts together with the monks, without renouncing the precepts or destroying the precepts, engages in impure conduct, practicing sexual acts, even with a being born in the animal realm, that monk is also considered defeated and should not dwell together. Having said these words, if a monk does such an act, he immediately becomes an unsuitable monk, an unsuitable practitioner, an unsuitable son, and will fall away from the reality of a monk. His monastic conduct will be destroyed, decayed, ruined, fallen, and defeated, and his practice of monasticism will be impossible to restore. For example, if the head of a palm tree is cut off, it cannot turn green again, nor can it grow, flourish, or become wide. From now on, for what should not be done, what should not be acted upon, and what should be abandoned, you must diligently guard your mind with mindfulness and vigilance. How can one not engage in such behavior? One must say, "I will definitely not do it."
