The Eighteenth Volume of "Instructions Treasury": The Meaningful-to-See Manual of Monastic Procedures. The Eighteenth Volume of "Instructions Treasury". The Meaningful-to-See Manual of Monastic Procedures. Here concludes the work called "The Meaningful-to-See Manual of Monastic Procedures." Homage to the Bhagavan, the All-Knowing One! This is the practice manual called "Meaningful to See: The Practice of Bestowing the Vows of a Lay Follower, Novice Monk, and Fully Ordained Monk." To the one who is equally skilled in all, the sun of compassion, constantly and uninterruptedly rising in the pure sky, dispelling the darkness of ignorance of those to be tamed, to the Victorious One with the body of space, I bow down! Having mastery over the hundred thousand volumes of the Vinaya, and knowing many methods for taming those to be tamed, maturing all beings with the instructions for taming, to the feet of Rangjung Dorje, I respectfully prostrate. From the ocean of his wisdom arises the great treasury of Vinaya texts, like wish-fulfilling jewels, completely filled with many precious and excellent explanations. Herein is arranged a clarification of the ritual procedures. This has two parts: the ordination as a novice monk and the ritual for a fully ordained monk, along with the procedures. The summary of the first is: questioning and the lay vows, requesting and the first preceptor, novice ordination and shadow measurement, the final recitation of the vows. If someone comes desiring to be ordained, one should proceed as follows: The one to be ordained should prostrate three times, then be made to join their palms and sit in front. There are three parts: the preparation of the ritual, the main part, and the conclusion. The first part has five aspects: questioning about obstacles, bestowing the lay vows, requesting and beseeching, giving the signs, and bestowing the ordination. The first is: It is extremely fortunate that you are entering the door of the precious doctrine of the Buddha and making the attainment of a human body meaningful. The essence of the doctrine, the training in discipline, is like the milk of a lion, so a precious vessel is needed. Therefore, one must have purity that is free from the four obstacles to the arising, abiding, increasing, and beautifying of the vows in one's being. If someone with obstacles is ordained, the vows will not arise in their being, or even if they arise, they will not abide, and so on, so it will not benefit them, and we will also incur faults, so it is necessary to ask about obstacles. In the root text of the Sutra, it says: The initial preceptor himself should come after questioning about the obstacles.

Thus, the distinctions for ordination are made. As it is said, "I ask you these questions about obstacles, without mental distraction, you must obtain answers that accord with reality, such as knowing 'it is not'!" Are you not a heretic? Are you not under fifteen years of age? Are you fifteen years old but unable to scare away crows? Able to scare away crows but not under seven years old? Are you a slave, etc.? In debt? Is it not that your father does not permit it? Is it not that your mother does not permit it? Do your parents not permit it, but you are not far from home? Are you ill? Have you caused a bhikkhuni to be displeased? Are you in a state of thievery? Are you in a different state? Are you not to be dwelling there? Are you a eunuch? Are you an hermaphrodite? Are you a transformation? Are you an animal? Have you entered into heresy? Are you a matricide? Are you a patricide? Are you an arhat-slayer? Have you caused dissension in the sangha? Have you drawn blood from the Tathagata with malicious intent? Has any of the four defeats occurred? Have you been expelled from your dwelling for not accepting a punishment contrary to cause? Are you missing a hand, etc.? Are you yellow-haired, etc.? Are you a single-nailed person, etc.? Have you been punished by the king? Is it that the king does not permit it? Is it that the king does not permit it, but you are not far from home? Are you known as a robber? Are you a grave-digger? Are you a shoemaker? Are you a candala? Are you a dwarf? Are you a non-human being? Is your northern voice unpleasant? Has your name become three? Are you not a woman who resembles a man? Are you not of a nature like Śtig-śtig? Are you not born from another continent, with different customs?" One should ask in this way. This is the ritual for questioning obstacles in order to examine whether ordination is suitable. Having asked in this way, if the answer is "No," then the second ritual of joining, which is the ritual for establishing as a lay follower, is as follows: The one to be established prostrates three times to the Buddha and the teacher. Sitting squatting in front, with palms joined at the heart, have them do so. It is very good that your continuum is without obstacles, but it is done in order to gradually enter the teachings, as it is said in the root sutra: "The former, the lay follower, the novice, and the monk, should not be the latter when perfected." Thus it is said. One must cause them to take the lay vows. For that, it arises from making refuge the beginning, and from making the commitment three times. In the root sutra, it says, "One should make the words of committing to taking refuge." And, apart from addition, self-
