To protect the precepts, one should learn not to tell even playful lies. If one drinks a single drop of intoxicating liquor, that limb is abandoned. Even if it doesn't intoxicate, drinking even a little bit of something that makes one tipsy causes a fault. To protect the precepts, one should not drink things like spicy drinks that circulate. If one indulges in worldly songs and dances, and wears anything that belongs to ornaments other than plain ornaments, or decorates oneself with weapons, or wears bright and shiny silk clothes, that limb is lost. Doing even a little bit of those things causes a fault. To protect the precepts, one should not engage in unseemly behaviors such as swaying, shouting, singing, and dancing, and one should not wear clothes and shoes that are more beautiful than plain ones. If one sleeps or sits on a bed or throne that is higher than a cubit, or sleeps or sits on a large bed decorated with pearls, gold, silver, etc., that limb is completely lost. Sleeping or sitting with even a little bit of those things causes a fault. To protect the precepts, one should not sit on even a plain cushion that is more luxurious than a plain one. From dawn in one's own region until noon, one may eat suitable foods that are appropriate for the time, but from noon until dawn, if one eats and swallows suitable foods, that limb is lost. Eating but not swallowing causes a fault. To protect the precepts, for afternoon drinks, such as rock candy, seven-day medicine, or yogurt, water, etc., for sick people, one may drink them in moderation, or one may add water and enjoy them. These are the ways to protect the eight precepts of the fasting vows, and one should rely on the three white foods (milk, yogurt, and butter), maintain bathing and cleanliness, not touch unclean things, and learn to take morning and evening baths. If one takes the fasting vows in this way and abides by these precepts, one will belong to one of the six assemblies of the Blessed One. To repay kindness, if one has not taken the eight precepts, into which of the six assemblies will one be included? The Buddha taught: Even if one has not taken lifelong vows, if one has taken the vows for one day and one night, one is also called a lay devotee. Therefore, one should strive to protect the precepts of the fasting vows and diligently practice the three trainings of listening, thinking, and meditating. After saying these words, one should make dedications and aspirations, and encourage the disciples to diligently engage in virtuous deeds in secluded places. This is the discipline of the fasting vows.

That is, promising for one day. It is said in the Abhidharmakośa, "From those who have fallen from the root and whose names have passed, abandon the Prātimokṣa vows." As it is said, if one is to observe the upavāsa vows tomorrow morning, then one must take and keep them. If one is observing when there is no lama, as stated in the teachings of the Amoghapāśa, one should take them oneself in the presence of a support. That is, having risen early, one should abide in the five-limbed bath and cleanliness. In the presence of the support, having offered whatever offerings are available and respectfully prostrated, with palms joined, with a completely pure mind, one should speak these words. I prostrate to all the Sugatas! I prostrate to the Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, the noble Avalokiteśvara! Just as the Tathāgatas, Arhats, Samyaksaṃbuddhas of the past, like a well-tamed horse, like a great elephant, having done what was to be done, having done what was to be done, having abandoned the burden, having attained their own benefit, having completely exhausted the bonds of existence, with the true teachings, with minds of perfect liberation, with wisdom of perfect liberation, for the sake of all sentient beings, for the sake of benefit, for the sake of liberation, for the sake of freedom from famine, for the sake of freedom from disease, for the sake of perfecting the dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment, and for the sake of realizing the unsurpassed perfect
