For the benefit of all sentient beings, to attain the state of Buddhahood, therefore, generate the intention to take and keep the upasaka vow of holding the four roots, etc., repeat and inform. Starting from the two lines, I take refuge in the Sangha. For as long as I live, may the venerable one accept me as an upasaka who mainly practices holding the four roots. After repeating twice, inform that it has been obtained, and after the third time, say "Excellent." Having thus obtained the upasaka vow of holding the four roots, etc., demonstrate and inform the method of guarding. From "Please consider, teacher" to "performing the first branch," and from "How else" to "until the end of life." Abandon taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, and lying, and return from lying. Similarly, I (name) abandon lying and return from lying. The fourth branch is done from "earth lord Arya" to "Excellent." Its precepts are: Explain the precepts of taking refuge and the precepts of the four roots as before, and exhort to strive to protect these and their related contents.

It is said in between "I become like me," thus it is said that Buddhahood is attained by the Upavāsa alone. In the Sutra of Moon Lamp it says: For billions of kalpas, as many as the sands of the Ganges, with a mind of faith, with food and drink, with umbrellas and banners, garlands of lamps, serving billions of Buddhas in order. Whenever this Dharma is completely destroyed, and the Sugata's teachings are about to disappear, practicing one precept day and night, this merit is superior to that. Know this. Furthermore, know that the benefits of the Upavāsa are extensively taught in all the scriptures. Recite this. Thus it is indicated. If there is no Dharma connection, then it is a monk, if there is, then please consider the teacher. I, named so-and-so, from this time until the end of my life, take refuge in the Buddha, the supreme of the two-legged. I take refuge in the Dharma, the supreme of those free from desire. I take refuge in the Sangha, the supreme of assemblies. From this time until tomorrow before sunrise, please, teacher, accept me to observe the eight-limbed Upavāsa. Say this three times. Use skillful means. Thus, you will have well received the vows of the Upavāsa in your continuum. It is not enough to receive, you must protect it. If you do not protect it, it is like picking up a stone from the ground and throwing it into the sky, letting it fall on your head, like hitting yourself. If you protect it, it is like throwing the stone on the ground far away, so that it cannot cause harm. Therefore, protecting the vows is extremely important. Regarding this, the eight things to be protected that are taught during the Upavāsa, abandon them from the door of the mind, and return from the door of body and speech. That is, thinking of following the past noble Arhats and protecting, make this thought, and then repeat. Thus it is indicated. Teacher, consider. Just as the past noble Arhats abandoned killing and returned from killing, so too, I, named so-and-so, from tomorrow before sunrise, abandon killing and return from killing. With this first limb, I follow the training of those noble Arhats. I follow. I do. Furthermore, the past noble Arhats

Taking what is not given, not practicing celibacy, speaking falsely, indulging in intoxicating drinks made from grains and other concoctions, which are places of carelessness, sounds of singing, dancing, and musical instruments, wearing garlands, applying perfumes, ornaments, and colors, using high and large beds, and abstaining from untimely food, thus abandoning untimely food. I, named so-and-so, until sunrise tomorrow, will abstain from taking what is not given, and so on, up to abandoning these practices. With these eight branches, I will follow the training of the noble Arhats. Recite this once. Practice well. Then, the precepts should be explained, starting with taking refuge, which is obtained for as long as life lasts. Having taken the upasatha vow until sunrise tomorrow, one obtains the commitment to protect the eight branches for one day. The precepts of taking refuge are explained as before. Obtaining refuge through the upasatha vow involves eight branches, and the two intermediate practices adorned by the conduct of Jowo Je (Atiśa, c. 982-1054), making ten in total. The first is: killing, taking what is not given, not practicing celibacy, lying, drinking alcohol, combining singing and dancing with garlands, combining high and large beds, and untimely food. These eight must be protected. Among them, if one kills a human being or one who has taken human form, the vows are lost from the root. If one kills animals or non-humans, the vows are damaged. To protect these, one should avoid hitting animals with stones, throwing stones into the sky, and pouring sand into water where there is doubt about whether there are living beings. In short, one should not harm any living being, large or small. If one takes more than a quarter of another's property without permission, it is lost from the root. If one takes less than that without permission, the vows are damaged. To protect this, one should not take another's grass, trees, or the like without permission. If one engages in sexual intercourse, the vows are lost; otherwise, if one ejaculates with lustful thoughts, the vows are damaged. To protect this, even when looking at men and women, one should not look with lustful thoughts, but with compassion. If one lies about the qualities of a spiritual teacher, the vows are lost. If one tells a great lie, it is damaged.
