One needs to possess these seven qualities. The meaning of the words is: Upa means near, Dhara means to hold, Sandhi means to join, Harana means to bestow. Because of holding on to firmly establish the superior intention nearby, closely combining with discipline, because of bestowing the teachings of acceptance and rejection, it is called Khenpo. If one does not make a request, one will not become a Khenpo, so one needs to request and have a commitment. The meaning of Khenpo is also related to this, because of reading it is Khenpo, because of reading and making others read the precepts, it is Khenpo. Because of bestowing the teachings of prohibition, accomplishment, and permission, and holding from falling into a lower state, directly combining with the precepts, and through it combining with Nirvana, it is Khenpo.

One should show respect. In cold weather, warm water should be provided. Then, the fourth preparatory practice is to bestow signs and attire and to examine the characteristics: The abbot should bestow the alms bowl and Dharma robes, and the recipient should receive them by touching both feet to the ground. After that, the abbot should admonish. When giving the Dharma robes, hand over the upper robe to the one sitting cross-legged in front, and both should hold it, saying: This is the Dharma robe known as the upper robe, which is usually worn on the upper body. Compared to householders and non-Buddhists, the sign becomes distinct. It enhances the mindfulness of a renunciate. It is a garment that protects against the touch of heat and cold from mosquitoes and horseflies, as well as from being naked on the upper body, wind, and sun, etc. Just as the Teacher carried it, it should be kept clean and guarded. Giving the lower garment: Receive it as before. This is the Dharma robe known as the lower garment, which is worn inside on the lower body. Compared to householders and non-Buddhists, the sign becomes distinct. It enhances the kindness of a renunciate. It especially distinguishes shame and embarrassment. It liberates from being naked on the lower body, from heat and cold, and from places of shame, protecting against the touch of mosquitoes, etc. In India, the three colors that are suitable are considered bad colors, so it is meant to avoid obesity and arrogance. It should be worn without separation as the Teacher carried it, and make the mind peaceful and gentle. Giving the alms bowl: Receive it as before. This is the sign of a renunciate's utensil—the alms bowl. It is distinguished from the utensils of householders and non-Buddhists. Because it is a vessel for receiving fallen food. Therefore, just as you fill it with food, fill your mind with knowledge and qualities. Just as you enjoy food from this bowl, you must enjoy the sacred Dharma, so you should hold such a utensil. Giving the mat: Except for the monastic community's grass mat, all dwellings and the white of householders and the mostly undamaged variegated colors of ordinary people should be avoided and abandoned, so you should also hold such a mat. Giving the water strainer: Hand over the water strainer. A renunciate should not enjoy water with living beings in it in order to prevent misconduct. The water strainer should place all living beings in their own place, and enjoy clean water.
