Having entered the profound and vast Dharma, if one wishes to practice the supreme Dharma, one must first rely on the root of the path—the virtuous friend. As stated in the *Compendium*, "All the Buddhas' teachings rely on virtuous friends; the king possessing all qualities has said so." And so on, there are countless scriptures and reasons that explain the importance of a virtuous friend. Although the characteristics of a virtuous friend, an *acharya*, vary greatly according to the upper and lower vehicles, it is difficult to find a virtuous friend who meets the standards. However, it is necessary to have three indispensable qualities: namely, proficient wisdom, compassionate intention, and patience in practice. That is to say, one must be proficient in the words and meanings of the Dharma being taught, able to dispel the doubts of others, have correct expression, one's own behavior must be virtuous and worthy of respect, and one must be proficient in the behavior or characteristics of a vessel, which is the quality of proficiency. The best is the compassion of wanting to place all sentient beings in the state of great Bodhi, not just saying it verbally; the intermediate is the altruistic intention of wanting to place the beings to be tamed in the state of Buddhahood; the lowest is the compassion of explaining without expecting any reward, with the intention of benefiting others, hoping that the other person can understand the content being taught well, which is essential. Without these, it will become the sin of selling the Dharma. When teaching the Dharma, patience without being tired of fatigue, being able to endure students' questions, being able to endure others' debates and being able to answer, these are all essential. This *Treasury of Pith Instructions* is also based on these. One must have the sutras, tantras, and three vows, understand the words and meanings being taught without misunderstanding, and have practiced the main types of guidance, and have corresponding experience. Although there are many explanations of the characteristics of a disciple, the most important thing is not to be greedy for fame and profit in this life, to compete with others, to only seek to obtain and demand, and so on. One must sincerely seek liberation from the depths of one's heart, and have unwavering faith in the root of all white dharmas—the three kinds of faith. For the Dharma that is heard, one must practice it to the best of one's ability, according to one's own understanding. Between teacher and student, by gathering together, do one's best to accomplish the superior, intermediate, and inferior things that please the teacher, and rely on him properly. As stated in the *Abhidharmakosha*, "One who has discipline, learning, and contemplation, diligently engages in meditation." As stated in the sutra, first, discipline is the root of the arising of qualities.

Take vows that are appropriate to your ability and keep them properly. The more you listen to the Buddha's teachings, the better. In particular, focus your mind on the excellent Dharma, and listen carefully to the stages of the path of the three types of individuals, which is the infallible path that leads people to non-retrogression. If the meaning of what you have heard is only lost in the realm of understanding once in a while, it will not come to your mind, so think and contemplate it again and again in detail. This will turn away from the attachment to the appearances of this life from the bottom of your heart, and a special mind will arise that seeks the definite good of the next life. At that time, when you examine the actions of most of those who pretend to be Dharma practitioners, including yourself and others, you will realize that they have gone into preaching Dharma, eating Dharma, casual Dharma, and beautiful Dharma, which not only does not benefit the next life, but also harms it. Therefore, you will be happy to engage in meditation and practice that properly takes the Dharma to heart. As the noble Nagarjuna said: Hearing increases wisdom, and if there is both thinking and hearing, then one should diligently engage in meditation, from which the supreme accomplishment arises. In general, there are two types of people who practice the profound meaning. For those who are fortunate and have training, it is enough to show the profound path all at once. However, for those who do not have the fortune to practice the profound meaning from the beginning, and for those who are the first to act, it is better to lead them gradually to the path of the three types of individuals, just as placing them on a ladder. As it says in the Compendium of Practices: For sentient beings who are the first to act, in order to lead them to the holy meaning, the perfect Buddha has placed this method like a ladder. Also, in the Two Examinations it says: Considering sentient beings who are without fortune and difficult to tame, first perform the purification and give alms. And so on, the method of gradual entry is explained in detail. In the old and new Ka-dam texts it says: The great medicine of the gradual path becomes the poison of the sudden path. The great medicine of the sudden path becomes the poison of the gradual path. Therefore, for those who have some training, the sudden path should be shown. For sentient beings who are the first to act, the gradual path should be shown. As it is said, when entering this treasury of precious instructions, in general, each of the Kagyu lineages has a complete sequence of attaining enlightenment, and each is a particularly profound path.
