In the 'Summary of Empowerment,' it says, 'With eyes that are closed and not closed.' Therefore, the eyes should not be opened too wide, nor should they be closed too tightly, but in a natural state, the eyeballs should be turned upwards. Except for special cases, in all cases of Sor Sam, the posture of the body and the way of looking must be like this. Having adjusted the body posture in this way, abandoning other activities, keeping the channels still, this is the body not moving. Doing as in the three silences, this is the speech not moving. The essential point of the mind is also roughly similar to the three silences, except that in the direction the eyes are looking, the mind is focused on the darkness of the sky. In 'Stainless Light,' it says, 'First, emptiness bodhi should not have any thoughts about darkness.' This is the mind not moving. Therefore, the accomplished Śāvaripa said, 'Immovability is having three qualities, entering the ten airs into the dhūtī channel, internal and external discursiveness cease, ten signs appear, it is the limb of individually cutting off.' These should be done completely. The glorious Sārahā also said: 'What is the use of saying much? This treasury of dharma is enough. Looking upwards with half-closed eyes, through meditation one knows the view is stable.' And, 'In the sky, if one can simultaneously determine and combine mind, air, and eye, one will surely generate jewel-like victorious qualities, these are all spoken by the Tathāgata.' The way of looking must be upwards, in the 'Great Connection' it says, 'Looking upwards without blinking the eyes, it will become an auspicious sign.' Therefore, the posture of the body is combined with binding, mixing the three, mind, eye, and air, indistinguishably with the sky above the crown of the head, meditating without thinking of anything. The visualization of gathering the fingertips is real, it is the first of the four real visualizations. Furthermore, in the instructions of Paṇḍita Bodhiticandra, it says, 'The instructions for the appearance of four different ways of directing the visualization are like this: the root of the visualization of gathering the fingertips, is the previously explained yoga of no thought, like a locksmith in a temple.' In this case, due to the fault of the mind not being withdrawn, discursive thoughts scatter, or faults of meditation appear, causing awareness to become dull, entering a state of neither meditation nor sleep. Guiding from the path of the way of looking, dissolving the mind into the center of the sky.

Like sharpening a knife, intensely focus your awareness. Diligently exert effort in stages, and then meditate with concentration. This is called "one-pointed yoga," like tethering a monkey to a single door. This is the second point of focus. If, by meditating in this way, the breath rushes upwards, the eye sockets ache, instead of wisdom arising, fainting occurs, or stinging pains arise, without altering the behavioral constraints from before, upon the clarity of awareness, without making any major alterations, remain there. Abandoning thoughts of the past and future, maintain the awareness that recognizes the self-face of the fresh, present awareness. This is "self-liberation yoga," like associating with the middle one of three siblings. This is the third point of focus. During that very focus, when the mind is concentrated, it can abide for a short time. Afterwards, the more you concentrate, the more empty it becomes. This is a fault of being too concentrated. Therefore, just maintain a watchful awareness without distraction, and relax without meditating on anything. This is "effortless yoga," like untying a drum. This is the fourth point of focus. These latter three points of focus should also be fully practiced on top of the first one. Sometimes concentrate, sometimes relax, sometimes look at the essence of clear awareness. Mostly, enter into effortless, uncontrived practice, and meditate with that as the foundation. This is the fifth point of focus. At the beginning of the first focus of night yoga, or at whichever of these two times is appropriate, enter into the actual practice of the profound dark retreat. The second is daytime yoga. Regarding the difference in location, the location for the affluent is like a half-mountain slope facing east or west, while the location for the renunciate needs to be a place where rocks or trees, etc., do not cause harm to one's body and is not visible to other people. But what is the same for both is that they need to meditate in a place where they can see the vast sky. Do not meditate in places where the eyes can see flowing water, lakes, pillars, etc. Some previous lamas have held this view, and some also believe that one should not look towards the northwest. Sunlight and the glare of snow mountains, etc., can harm the eyes, so also choose a place where these things do not appear in the field of vision. The time is in the morning with your back to the sun, and also in the afternoon.
