Just rest in that relaxed state. By this practice, strength arises, and awareness abides in the state of bliss and emptiness, at which point the demons of joy and sorrow are cut off in unbornness. Furthermore, regarding the various appearances of the six realms, the various illusions of happiness and suffering in the three higher realms, and the various illusions of suffering in the three lower realms, one should recognize that all of these are illusions of one's own mind. From the very beginning, recognize that the essence of unbornness is naturally luminous, without fear, apprehension, arrogance, or conceptualization, and rest the mind in its natural state of reality. When awareness abides in the nature of bliss, emptiness, and clarity, the demons of afflictions are naturally liberated. As it is said in the Great Mother (Prajnaparamita Sutra): "Any son or daughter of good family who holds, recites, understands, and properly contemplates this Prajnaparamita, even if dwelling in a dangerous valley, cliff, bird's nest, or abyss, will not have fear or apprehension towards the forces of demons." Why is that? Because they are without arrogance. It is also said: "One should also meditate on external emptiness, without any object of focus." In this way, from the perspective of the unceasing nature of appearances, whatever happiness, suffering, and illusions appear, without fear or apprehension, practice by resting in the true nature, then all appearances will arise as the companions and power of the Dharma. If faults arise in meditation, there are two faults in meditation: dullness and agitation. Dullness is further divided into: signs of dullness of the elements, and signs of dullness of obstacles. The signs of dullness of the elements are: if the body is heavy and awareness is unclear, it is a sign of earth dullness. If awareness is unclear and one makes cold sounds, it is a sign of water dullness. If awareness is unclear and one is stiff and wants to move, it is a sign of wind dullness. If the mind is confused and one does not understand, and there is heat and dust, it is a sign of fire dullness. Thus, whichever of the four elements one is dulled by, one should immediately stand up, straighten the body, bring the legs together, join the palms above the head, dissolve the outer four elements of the body into the inner four elements, dissolve the outer and inner four elements into non-duality, throw the mind suddenly into the sky, awareness without support, clarity without object, without concept, self-

By keeping clear and transparent in the vast expanse of clarity, dullness will naturally dissipate. As the Mother Sutra says, "Earth is not in water, nor is it visible." "Earth is not in the form aggregate, nor is it visible." "Earth is not between the form aggregates, nor is it visible." And again, "The nature of phenomena abides in the mind." "Space does not abide in anything." "The nature of mind abides in space." And again, "Meditating on space is meditating on the Perfection of Wisdom." Thus, having cleared away dullness, bring awareness back to its natural state and remain in a state of wakefulness. Secondly, regarding the signs of dullness: excessive sleepiness, confusion of awareness, or unhappiness, the mind not abiding in its natural state, and heavy breathing. For this, pray to the lama, take refuge, and give the body, sickness, and all thoughts to the demons. In a terrifying place, strip naked and jump and run around. Twist the body, stretch, contract, and do as many postures as you can remember. Afterwards, relax the body and mind, and awareness will naturally dissipate. This is the method for curing dullness. The second fault of meditation is excitement: the mind does not abide in its natural state, and awareness wanders outwards. For this, apply the antidote of mindfulness, and look at the source of the wandering. When you recognize that the source is in your own mind, immediately let go of all thoughts, relax the body and mind, and remain in a state of wakefulness. Look inwards with awareness, and remain in a state of non-thought. If this does not pacify it, observe how far it can wander, and let it wander outwards and inwards in all directions. By letting go in this way, awareness will naturally dissipate, as it cannot find a place to go. Which is the greater fault, dullness or excitement? Dullness is the greater fault. Why? Because dullness is more associated with ignorance, while excitement is more associated with wisdom. Therefore, the greatness of remaining in a state of wakefulness on the basis of recognizing the nature of reality is that all faults are transformed into qualities. If awareness wanders outwards to external objects, that is all within the category of excitement, so it is very important to maintain mindfulness, and to let the mind abide in a state of non-activity. Just as actions such as saying "Form is emptiness" or "It is not empty" are the elaborations of a Bodhisattva. Therefore, one should practice the meaning of the non-elaborated state of reality without distraction. In general, whenever adverse conditions arise, all phenomena
