These are explanations of other branches. Firstly, the common preliminary is to sever attachment to samsara, and the special preliminary is to establish the basis of the path and engage in accumulation and purification. The first aspect has four points: the instruction on contemplating the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowments: From the terrifying suffering of samsara, now that we have obtained this precious human body endowed with the eighteen qualities of leisure and endowment, we must achieve liberation. The reason is that there is no other basis for practicing Dharma than this. This is extremely difficult to obtain, like the flower of the Udumbara. Having obtained it, it is of great significance, like a wish-fulfilling jewel. Therefore, at this time when we have obtained a pure human body as a basis for Dharma practice, just as we must cross a river when we have a boat, we must now strive to cultivate this stainless essence that reveals the ultimate benefit for lifetimes to come. As Shantideva said, "This leisure and endowment is extremely difficult to obtain. Having obtained it, one can accomplish all purposes. If one does not accomplish benefit in this life, how can one obtain this perfection in the future?" Je Tsongkhapa also said, "Leisure and endowment, a human body, is like a precious island. Do not let it be wasted, Dingriwa." Secondly, contemplating death and impermanence: Although the virtuous actions accumulated in the past have allowed us to obtain a somewhat complete basis for higher realms in this life, this is not permanent. Life is shorter than the autumn mist, the body is as easily destroyed as a water bubble, and possessions cannot last like illusions. Relatives and friends are easier to separate than silk threads. As the sutra says, "Youth passes like a mountain stream, moment by moment, in an instant, very quickly. Like dense autumn clouds without essence, and summer torrents that do not last long, realize that possessions are impermanent and without essence." Therefore, since birth, no one has been spared from death, and we will surely die. There is no certainty about life, and we do not know when we will die. At the time of death, when life is exhausted, wealth, possessions, home, body, power, and so on, nothing will follow us. Therefore, there is absolutely no need to cling to the activities of this life. At the time of death, nothing but the Dharma can save us. Like a snake entering the lap of a coward, or a fire burning on the head of a beautiful woman, we must now strive with intense diligence to practice the sacred Dharma. As the venerable one said:

In the midst of gasping, the Lord of Death, the demon, will seize you. Practice now, Dingriwa! Thus it is said. Third is contemplating cause and effect. Having died like that, one will not completely disappear, for the two, virtue and vice, will definitely follow like body and shadow. There is no power to abandon sins that have already been committed. There is nothing to take away that one has not done oneself. If one falls into the lower realms due to non-virtuous actions, what will one do? There is no certainty of not being born there. Even if one is born in the higher realms, all the aspects of suffering there are also produced by non-virtue. Therefore, from now on, even if it costs one's life, one will not commit sins. One will not despise even the smallest virtuous actions. One will not be timid or shrink from great virtuous deeds. One must practice virtuous actions continuously with body, speech, and mind, like an uninterrupted wheel of fire. Therefore, one must carefully adopt and abandon virtue and vice. One should make such a firm resolution. The holy one said: The ripening of actions, cause and effect, is truly certain. Be wary of non-virtuous sins, Dingriwa! Thus it is said. Fourth is contemplating the faults of samsara. We sentient beings, under the power of karma, wherever we are born in the high or low places of samsara, there is no opportunity for happiness, only suffering. Body, speech, and mind are tormented by the disease of desire, bound by the iron chains of self-grasping, and caught in the net of various sufferings. Wherever one is born in the six realms, it is meaningless. Hell has the suffering of heat and cold, hungry ghosts have the suffering of hunger and thirst, and animals have the suffering of stupidity and exploitation. Even if one obtains the state of gods and humans in the happy realms, one cannot escape the edge of suffering. Samsara is like a continuous stinging pain in the body, or like a criminal being imprisoned in a dungeon. Therefore, now, when one has the favorable conditions to practice the Dharma, one must definitely escape from this terrifying state of samsara. The venerable Lord said: Thinking about the faults of samsara, the heart will be filled with fear. One will not feel joy in this samsara, Dingriwa! Thus it is said. In this way, by contemplating through four aspects, if one turns away from the pursuit of this life, then a genuine path of liberation will arise in one's being. The second part has five points: The foundation of the common vehicle is taking refuge, the foundation of the Great Vehicle is generating the mind of enlightenment, the favorable condition is accumulating merit and offering mandalas.
