It is like this, the holy Sochungba said: You stare at the sky directly in front of your eyes, and look at the very awareness that is looking. At that time, a feeling that is free from all discriminations and has not established any entity will arise. If that does not arise, then I do not have the key point of the instruction. Having said that, he also said: Staring at the awareness that arises suddenly, after a while, the addition will naturally arise. He also said: Others take emptiness as the path, we take awareness as the path. Others take non-discrimination as the path, we take discrimination as the path. Third, the follow-up has two aspects: observing the warmth and dispelling obstacles, and enhancing the experience and indicating the vows of the oral instruction. The first aspect has two, first is observing the warmth: If the lama points it out but it does not correspond and certainty does not arise, it is a sign of being lost. If a little certainty arises at first, but you do not know how to cultivate it, it is leaking. If you know how to cultivate it, but you do not cultivate it due to distraction and it is slow, it is dull. If you have shortcomings and advantages, but you cling to the wrong and cannot cultivate it, it is inverted, so you must recognize it and strive to practice. The second is to dispel obstacles, there are sinking and agitation. Sinking is when awareness becomes dull, dispelling sinking has three types: small, medium, and large. The small one is to repeatedly observe what the nature of that experience is, and practice it. The medium one is, when that situation occurs, do various actions of body and speech such as "Phaṭ (ཕཊ།,梵文天城体:फट्,梵文罗马拟音:phaṭ,meaning: to destroy)", and recognize the subsequent awareness and practice it. The big one is to dispel the thought of practice outwards, and say to the practice: From today onwards, go to the other side of the measure, and do not come again. Having said that, throw it away far away, and relax and rest nakedly on whatever arises. Doing that repeatedly will cause self-illumination to arise without clinging. That also needs to be broken down and cultivated. Je Dampa said: Turbid water will be clear when stirred violently, a silver mirror will be clear when wiped, a yogi's awareness will be good when broken down. That's what he said. The second aspect has two, first is recognizing agitation: In general, there are many aspects, agitation is when discriminations are violently scattered and cannot be settled. Scattering includes: not remembering, remembering for a long time, subtle, various kinds of scattering. Dissipation is: clearly meditating, but awareness is not concentrated and scattered, like fish in a water bucket. Rising is: abiding is thin, like foam in a water bucket, there are types and there are

The faults of being arrogant and conceited due to pride, and of being discouraged and lazy, thinking that someone like me cannot practice this Dharma. Secondly, the way to eliminate these obstacles is: although gradually eliminating everything with wisdom is also possible, nevertheless, focus on the special key points in whatever situation, relax the mind, tighten the upper and lower four limbs, and this will eliminate the first three obstacles. The upper obstacle is eliminated by not being distracted from that and focusing on awareness. Cut off the root of lineage and qualities, and see if there is anyone better than yourself, or especially someone capable of surpassing you. Thinking of the qualities of others, maintain equanimity. For discouragement, pray to the guru and enhance the sharpness of awareness to eliminate it. The second part is extracting the essence, divided into two parts, the first part is extracting the essence: If obstacles are eliminated in this way and practice is done, but no experience arises, then introduce and extract the essence with these three: essence, nature, and characteristics. First, the essence: The essence is self-knowing awareness, which is both clear and stable. An example of clarity is like a flower blooming, muddy water becoming clear, and the arrival of the sixteenth (referring to the moon) night. An example of stability is like a turtle placed on a millstone, because it has not met for a long time, it does not know day and night. Like honey sticking to food, although the source of conceptual thought is cut off, it cannot leave clearly. Like throwing a stone on mature clay, even if the exterior and interior are destroyed, it still stays in the original position. An example of the nature being clear and powerful: like a garuda fearlessly flying in the sky at the edge of the cliff of the six realms, like a lion fearlessly displaying power in other vehicles, like awareness unwilling to be deceived by external conditions, like a great banner being blown by the wind, such an experience will arise. An example of the characteristic being emptiness, luminosity, and clarity: like the sky, pervading everything and without boundaries, like a great river continuously flowing, like being able to use antidotes, images appear on a glass the size of a mustard seed. In short, the essence is the experience of shamatha, the nature is the experience of vipassanā, and the characteristic is the realization of the union of shamatha and vipassanā. Furthermore, the superior faculty attains realization and liberation simultaneously merely through recognition, the intermediate faculty causes all appearances and conceptual thoughts to arise as wisdom merely through remembrance, and the inferior faculty transforms the inferior faculty by practicing in short sessions with many repetitions through bodily posture and viewing.
