It is the nature of mind. Even when looking and trying to fix it, one cannot identify "what this is." Even if one doesn't search for it, its own nature shines forth brightly. It is not changed by the power of good or bad karma. It transcends everything and is not attached to anything. Because it is separate from everything, it is the essence of everything. Because it is separate from thought, it is clear to meaningless thoughts. From the directionless, manifold directionless things arise. Even when they arise, it is impossible to determine to which direction they belong. Thus, that which has not become merely "this," that very suchness is one's own guru. If one were to tell the story of the guru, it would be like this. Since the guru has no near or far, there is not a single sentient being that is not pervaded by him. The guru himself, for the sake of pure aspirations, there is not one who has not become part of his lineage. The guru himself, because of great compassion, there is not one who has not been placed in the state of the primordial Buddha. The guru himself, because his actions are powerful, enters all of samsara and nirvana and freely transforms. Because the guru has no change, even if viewed wrongly, that essence remains. One has never been separated from the guru for a moment. Although one has been with him for a long time, it is difficult for anyone to see his face. Since the guru has no passing away, it is wonderful that he has obtained eternal protection. To such a guru of one's own mind, look at the face of knowing one's own self. Pray with freedom from doubt and hesitation. Practice with devotion that is unartificial and abides in its own place. Perform service that constantly abides in its own nature. Offer food of clarity and emptiness without grasping. Offer drink that realizes the inseparability of mindfulness and distraction. Offer clothes that know appearances and sounds to be illusory. Spread a cushion of uncontaminated bliss underneath. Offer a hat that is not sought but is primordially present. Offer gifts without grasping at whatever arises. In the palace of omniscience, without self-grasping, surrounded by retinues without distinguishing samsara and nirvana. Abiding without interruption in the past, present, and future, constantly receive the instructions of self-appearing freedom. How wonderful, one's own mind is the guru. Again, being held by compassion is so kind. The karmic connection of yoga practiced in previous lives is great. It is also wonderful that compassion does not abandon it. By relying on the guru in this way, the blessings of the guru arise in this way. From the mud of samsara, liberation occurs in the place where one has not fled. One arrives in the place where one has not gone to the state of Buddhahood. One understands that there is neither good nor bad in samsara and nirvana. One realizes Buddha and sentient beings.

It is the difference of realization. If the nature of mind is realized without error, and certainty manifests, it is called a Buddha. His qualities are beyond the limits of expression. Furthermore, even when a lama is shown, it arises in this way. Because the nature of mind is not realized as it is, the discriminating mind that grasps what is not it as it arises. Because of following after it, one engages in the activity of suffering. Therefore, it is labeled as a sentient being. Now, one guards oneself. Do not follow after samsara, weary of the past. There is no great effort to accomplish nirvana. The nature of mind, holding its own ground, remains in its own state. This nature of mind, without being identified as this, arises from ignorance through practice with it. It also flourishes through this understanding of its characteristics. If one cultivates in that way, it is like this: Emptiness is one's own nature, there is no need to seek the Dharmakaya. Whatever appears is self-arisen, there is no need to negate the Rupakaya. The nature of mind is self-moving, there is no need to fabricate the three Kayas. Since the root of samsara is severed, there is no need to abandon it. Since one's own mind is Buddha, there is no need to hope. Since it is primordially so, there is no need to meditate with the mind. If you also do this, wouldn't it be good? Those who are accomplished in seeing the mind without distraction, wouldn't it be good if they were free from the mind of seeing? The great meditator who continuously meditates without separation, wouldn't it be good if the meditator were liberated in his own place? The practitioner who constantly accomplishes enlightenment, wouldn't it be good if he understood spontaneous accomplishment without meditation? The yogi who practices without fabrication, wouldn't it be good if he settled his own mind? Although many qualified lamas have been shown, each lama has his own teachings. All of those roots come down to the mind. From then on, to that very lama of one's own mind, I have seen his face, heard his voice, and asked for many instructions. I have prayed to seven kind lamas. Through offering praise and requesting blessings, I have written down in letters the understanding that arose from within, that one's own mind is the lama. If you see contradictions and errors, do not look at the words, look at the meaning. This is the rambling of a madman. I do not ask for forgiveness for anything. There is no wealth to offer forgiveness. Thus he spoke. "One's Own Mind is the Lama," written by Rinpoche Kyergaṅpa (14b4). The Vajra Song Introducing the Mind as Deathless. Namo Guru. During the day, the body of the deity is empty of appearance. Realize that there is no birth or death. At the time of death,
